Saul Kaplan, founder of Business Innovation Factory, published a paper several years ago titled, “The Plight of Young Males,” on March 9, 2011. It was later used in the textbook They Say, I Say. In his paper, Kaplan presents his unique viewpoint toward America’s educational system. The author to makes the point that the young males in our educational system are underachieving their potential, and that we as Americans must alter the educational system to better suit the needs of young men. Statistical data is the basis for the author’s argument. Throughout this essay, Saul Kaplan attempts to strengthen his plea for a new educational system better suited for young males by: establishing himself as a credible author, providing logic, and appealing to the reader’s emotion. The author aims to establish his credibility in this essay through his career achievements. Kaplan explains how he is the founder of a company named Business Innovation Factory; which is a company that creates and tests new business models. The author brought this issue up solely through data on the subject without making it appeal to the reader. The author does not do well appealing to all sexes when explaining this topic. Kaplan directs his message directly toward a male audience. He repeatedly states that he supports the success of women, but fails to address this audience, causing them to be alienated them from the topic. The author exhibits physical emotion in one spot on page 734; he says that looking at trends of colored men “will make you cry.” This essay is presented in a very formal tone until the author says this statement.
