She continues by arguing that “fire borrowing” also led to a reduction in the projects taken on by Wildlife and Fisheries Habitat Management. This had an adverse effect on threatened and endangered species, decreasing the overall health of the fragile ecosystem. Her pathos pulls at the reader’s heartstrings. She makes the readers think of the jobless employees and their families as well as the animals that were endanger of losing habitat and their…
An article counteracting the renowned film, Blackfish, a documentary about the inhumane treatment and situation of orcas in captivity, was released by Seaworld Cares. Seaworld Cares is a foundation for animals supported by Seaworld. The article was the company’s retort against the film’s “ultimately false and misleading points”. The main purpose of the article is to persuade the reader, while providing some information to support their points. They wish to urge the reader to believe that not everything in the film, Blackfish, was true nor trustworthy.…
Your newspaper recently published an editorial by Jeremy Rifkin, author of The Biotech Century and president of the foundation on economic trends. The essay is entitled "A Change of Heart about Animals." In this essay Rifkin cites scientific studies about pigs, birds, and a monkey that all point to animals potentially having much greater intelligence and capacity to feel than we often give them credit for. He also speaks about various movements in support of animal rights and advocated greater empathy from humans to animals.(Rifkin 34-35) Rifkin's focus on animal empathy seems entirely detached from the reality of the situation; his piece fails to consider the socioeconomic implications of extended animal rights.…
Joy Williams “Save the whales, Screw the Shrimp” is ultimately only partly successful because, while it has reasonable ethos and logos and is a good example of expository text, the author seems to place too much blame on the reader that today’s culture has all but entirely lost touch with what nature really is. Throughout the text, Williams uses a variety of rhetoric devices to make her writing more effective. Logos, ethos, pathos, style, tone, audience, and mode are used in a way that seems to give readers the impression that she has authority over them. In the source of “History and Humans/rest of nature”, it’s been said that humans respond to change and in turn feed the climate.…
Michelle tries to enlighten the reader about these issues happening but also tries to persuade the readers to become active in fixing this world-wide issue occurring. It is said from Tim Male, vice president of at Defenders of Wildlife: “Politically controversial species attract more funding, as do species in heavily studied places: ‘We live in a world of unconscious triage.” Most animals we see today will end up disappearing just because of the accomplishment of not being able to pay for certain developments. Since each method favors certain priorities, when the computer method became about, it made more sense due to all of these methods not working for all species. These methods were working and capable of doing its job, but did not work for every specie roaming the earth.…
Have you ever heard of the West African Black Rhinoceros? As of 2011 this species is extinct and society could have prevented it (Gerkens). The species is thought to have died off, because of poaching, but taking precautions could have prevented their extinction. This is just one example of Earth’s deterioration with irreversible consequences that could have been averted. Societies use Earth and all of its resources and expects no repercussions.…
SeaWorld of Hurt The growing argument over if killer whales should or should not be kept in captivity is becoming more widespread and well-known, simply because of attractions like SeaWorld and improving technology that extend further opportunities for research. The first article Why Killer Whales Shouldn’t Be Kept in Captivity by the SOS Dolphins organization, written August 7th, 2017, portrays an argument over the negative effects of using Orcas on display in captivity. The second article Research Helps Wild Whales from the SeaWorld Cares entertainment organization, written in March 2017, explains the reasoning their efforts in captivating these Orcas and furthering research. While the both articles cover the same topic, Why Killer Whales…
Morelle cites five different perspectives, ranging from professionals in wildlife to well known organizations, in regard to the decline of wildlife. Through the use of reasoning, emotional appeals and credible sources, Morelle effectively convinces her audience that the decline of wildlife poses a serious problem and action must be taken to slow the situation. Morelle starts the article with a statement made by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) claiming that vertebrate population would reduce to two-thirds by 2020 and that…
In the article “What’s Wrong with Animal Rights”, author Abby Hearne states that the current animal rights movement is “built upon a misconceived premise that rights were created to prevent us from unnecessary suffering.” This mixed with the misunderstanding of animal happiness and what it really means. This paper is written for people who are supporters of the current animal rights movement. The author Abby Hearne’s main argument in this essay is that our definition of animal rights is fundamentally wrong.…

Tests conducted on water samples from these locations have revealed high levels of chemicals that could affect sea otters. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He notes that Secondly, the author contends that pollution is a reasonable explanation of the decline of other sea mammals' populations…
In my textbook Chapter 14 How Biological Diversity Evolves page 269 relates to the TED talk. The chapter relates to the TED talk because it stated how species are going through a mass extinction. The textbook Campbell Essential Biology gives an example of “oil spills, entanglement in commercial fishing nets, and diseases are among the causes of declining sea otter populations.” (p.269) That connects to the TED talk because tapirs are becoming extinct because their habitat is getting destroyed by the construction of cities and there is a lot of tapir road kill.…
Jimmy Carter writes, “tearing open the heart of our greatest refuge,” to describe what industrialization will do to the Arctic National Wildlife refuge. The general argument in Carter’s forward is that this Arctic refuge should not be developed for industry. First, he uses facts and evidence to build his claim. Then he uses word choice and imagery to support his argument. His purpose is to persuade his audience that development will have negative consequences for the Arctic refuge, in order to protect this unique awe inspiring wildlife refuge.…
Currently many animals are at risk of extinction due to pollution, overharvesting and habitat destruction. (Text 4) In text 3 it states “de -extinction tend to resurrect single charismatic species yet millions of species are at risk of extinction.” In other words there are many species at the brink of extinction yet scientists are concerned about the de-extinction of species. In addition it is believed that de-extinction will become a “moral hazard”.…
