Like the Great Depression, the rise of the KKK, and Jim Crow laws. Including how these historical events affected the Hispanic and Mexican communities in the sugar beet towns. For example, during the Great Depression the author talks about massive deportations of Mexicans, even those who were born in this country were sent to Mexico. Those who did not go back were obligated to sign contracts that paid them less than what they were already making, which was already below minimum wage. Additionally, when the KKK was a popular hate group at the time, Mexicans and Hispanics were major targets. Due to their religious background being catholic and not christian, as well as being the biggest minority group in colorado.
