The story of Romeo and Juliet is a story of two star crossed lovers who come from two different apposing families that let their feuds with each other blind their eyes from the love their children have for each other. Under these circumstances where better to set my paper than in Virginia during the brink of the Civil War, the war in which some of the bloodiest battles ever fought on U.S. soil accrued in, and the nation was split pinning family against family and brother against brother.
I chose to set my “Romeo and Juliet” in Virginia, in 1861.The Confederate States started to secede from the union on December 20th of 1860 when South Carolina decided to leave the United States of America, and after this quickly followed Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. It wasn’t until President Abraham Lincoln Called for Volunteers to bring an end to the southern succession, that Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia also joined the Confederate States. The only members of Virginia that did not join the Confederacy were the forty-eight counties that decided to join the union and become West Virginia. One of the major reasons for the succession of the south was the 1857 court case of Dred Scott v. Sandford, where a slave by the name of Dred Scott sued for his freedom saying that he had been a slave in Illinois but when his owner moved to the Wisconsin territory that because of the Missouri compromise ban on slavery he would be a free man.
