Recent Background of the Issue
In the European Union, Roma people are one of the largest ethnic minorities, they consist about six million out of ten to twelve million people living in the EU. But these Roma people are facing many problems such as social exclusion, discrimination, and unequal opportunities to education, employment, health, and housing. About 71% of the Roma people that are living in Eastern Europe live in deep poverty. Only 29% actually graduate secondary school, and it is also lower in other parts of the countries in the region. Finding jobs can be hard considering the fact that less than half the men, and less than a quarter of the women can actually find a job. (1) The Romani also face dreadful persecution. Women had their ears cut off, kids were being taken from their parents, and they were being branded with hot ions. Countries such as Italy and Germany demanded the removal of all Romani. (2) These Roma people are not receiving their basic human rights, something that everyone should have which is stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. …show more content…
