As they go through life, people will experience different situations and learn different…
All these explanations are plausible and insightful in analyzing the paradox in China. However, one factor that is not normally stressed is politics: whether the quality of government influences people’s happiness and whether the implementation and enforcement provide more satisfaction to the general public are open to interpretation. Derek Bok illustrates how political factors impact happiness in the United States and discusses potential policies that can be implemented to promote happiness through his The Politics of Happiness (2010). He reveals that the happiest, if also the most prosperous, countries have been successful democracies for more than 80 years, and public disaffection towards the government strongly impacts levels of satisfaction.…
Peter Novick creates a narrative looking at the approach that has been used over the course of American history looking at professional historiography. Specifically, he looks at the idea of objectivity and its development in America, as well as the contrast of development of the idea in other places. For Americans, objectivity was the basis of their practice. It began so by the development of a certain cadre of historians taught in Germany and perpetuated by them when they returned to the American system. Leopold von Ranke to them was the definition of what a historian should be, describing him as an objective and impartial figure dislocated from bias.…
According to hedonism, a life is good to the extent that it is filled with happiness (pleasure) and bad to the extent it is filled with unhappiness (pain). It is important to note that hedonists are not referring to physical pleasure as the key to the good life, rather, they are referring to it as enjoyment (attitudinal pleasure). Another way to interpret this is by saying that a good life is having many pleasurable experiences and nothing else. A hedonist might say that if you enjoy doing something, then doing so is pleasurable, so your life is good. Well, according to Robert Nozick, a very famous philosopher, a good life is not just about having a good time, it’s about having a true time.…

We are our surroundings. Our surroundings make us, us. Our environment gives us our character. For instance some people may adapt to their surroundings, or may become the exact opposite. People are easily victimized by their habitat.…
According to our text, we must calculate and decide the consequences of our actions. This is known as the Betntham's Hedonistic Calculus. In this certain situation, we need to calculate all of our possible outcomes. I would break down the 50,000 individuals into age and into sex. It is not rational to administer the cure to people of older ages.…
Evolutionary defence of the Epicurean’s argument that pleasure is the highest good My argument is that from the standpoint of evolution, hedonism is the most valid theory of the ‘good life’. The scope will be narrowed down to Quantitative Hedonism (Bentham, 1789), as there is only one kind of pleasure and its worth is measured on dimensions of intensity and duration. This essay will first lay out the importance of this view and its major positions which it stands for. After which, objections against Hedonism (from Aristotle and Cicero), and the Evolutionary perspective will be discussed.…
However, people don’t experience the same things, which is the cause of different personalities and different outlooks on the right or wrong decisions. Like I stated before, our morals get expanded by experience. An example could be one child experiences not…
Introduction: John Stuart Mill, although accepts the Radicals legacy in the utilitarian domain, he adds to and supplements their points of views, especially in the areas of human motivation and the true nature of happiness. When we read through Mill’s approach on happiness, we see how a lot of Radicals’ assumptions are modified, this can be seen in the second chapter of his essay: Utilitarianism. The Proportionality Doctrine is one of the most prominent concepts that emerge from his writing which suggests that actions are “right” when doing them leads to the highest amount of happiness as a lack of pain, and the reverse of this constitutes a “wrong” action. Here, happiness means pleasure which comes with the absence of pain, and unhappiness…
Influence of Aldous Huxley in Brave New World: Horror of Hedonism Throughout history one great philosophical question that has mankind has struggled with is the question on the purpose of life. A primary answer for this question provided by different philosophers throughout history is the hedonism. The notion that the purpose of life is to be as happy as possible, so, therefore, individuals should live to fulfill their maximum net happiness while avoiding stress and suffering at all cause, because happiness and pleasure are the greatest good and fulfillment, and pain and suffering are the greatest evil. However, the validation of this notion is completely discredited by Aldous Huxley in his utopian world of his novel: Brave New World.…
What is more important: happiness or reality, morality and autonomy? This question is a thought experiment by the philosopher Robert Nozick in order to refute the philosophy of Ethical Hedonism. This theory says that only happiness is necessary for a good life, and it is also sufficient; we do not need anything else. For hedonists happiness is the only intrinsic value, which means that everything else improves our lives only to the extent that it makes us happy. The term of hedonism, comes from the Greek word “hédoné” which means pleasure.…
Humans change a lot especially when affected by certain events happening to them or around them. They start off with one view-point or state of mind and then have that same state of mind or view-point completely thrown away. Who people surround themselves with reflect their personality, decisions, and mindset. “Who you choose to be around lets you know you are.” This is a quote from Han from Fast And Furious Tokyo Drift, in the movie Han has moved to Tokyo after leaving America.…

Relativism is the belief that each culture defines their own morality and because of this we should not judge a cultures morality because one is not better than the other. Acceptance is a strength of relativism, because it could promote the idea that we are all different and we should all accept each other for who we are. Another of its strengths is allowing people to choose a moral code to live by and not be subjected to one way of thinking. However there are some downsides to relativism, for example promoting intolerance. Intolerance promoted due to the fact that if a culture is committing genocide relativists say that we are not allowed to judge them because that might just be a part of their culture.…
