All three of these writers convey the importance of literacy, but behind their individual discoveries are great struggles.
Mark Mathabane had mixed feelings about education during his childhood, but when he got older he knew that education was the most important thing in his life. His thought on education was unnecessary when he was young according to him. “I vowed never to go because school was a waste of time” (Mathabane 1). When he was young he never wanted to go to school, but was forced by his mom. His childhood life was consisting of hanging out with a gang of ten, eleven, and twelve year olds. ”They slept in abandoned cars, smoked glue and benzene” (2). “these books have made me all that I am.” That was the kind of remark I couldn’t ignore” (Rodriguez 3). Richard Rodriguez would always read book and expect that he would get smarter. During his childhood he would go to school in the US and was told by his teachers that reading is the key to success. He would read many books but never understand what this would change in his educational success. “I simply concluded that what gave a book its value was some major idea it contained”(3). Richard rodriguez’s mom would always wonder why he read a lot of books all the time.“Or was it just a convenient excuse for not helping around the house on Saturday mornings?”(3). His parents always wanted him to do more work than read. There through on education was not important as working. They would prefer their son to go work than learn on education. Richard rodriguez was still spending time reading and started to realise why he was reading all those books that he read. “I had the idea that they were crucial for my academic success” (3). He stated that they were crucial for his academic success and is important for his own education. Richard Rodriguez became successful at writing and speaking in english from just simply reading all those books. “My habit of reading made me a confident speaker and writer of English”.
