The key components of this step include communicating to all the stakeholders (frontline nurses, managers, and administration) of this new practice change. Burnes and Cooke (2013) states “that it is important for the lines of communication remain open and honest in order to create a sense of security and trust in all those involved with the proposed change” (p. 410). The inclusion of each stakeholder, especially the frontline nurses, in planning and decision making during the process promotes the feeling of empowerment that can overcome any resistance to this new change. This is where the newly learned practice changes become habitual for all staff. Nurses will have ongoing support until the change is considered complete and are comfortable with this new practice of NPWT. Staff will have reinforcement and encouragement during daily rounds and each monthly meeting for the duration of this project. Feedback will be encouraged at these times. Annual skill fairs will reinforce newly learned skill of NPWT and allow opportunity for staff to resolve any issues/questions. Once this project is completed, an evaluation of any problems/challenges encountered, and successes will be reviewed for future references. The pilot project will also compare current results to the previous year August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016 results of diabetic foot ulcers healing to promote validity and consistency.
