Have you ever wondered how Kenya came to be? Well, before Kenya was even its original name it was called “Kamba land” and was only renamed because of a German wanderer asking what a mountain was called. Then Britain soon took control of this land, making it their protectorate. After Britain a man named Jomo Kenyatta became the very first president of Kenya and is well known for helping Kenya gain freedom from Britain.
Before Britain, Kenya was a peaceful part of the world that had been stumbled upon by a German explorer. This explorer, whose name is Dr. Ludwig Krapf, encountered a member of an ethnic group called Akamba. Krapf wandered through what was called Kamba land at the time only to spot a snow-capped mountain. They built this railway as a means of quick communication between the coast and its Uganda and Sudan possessions. The railroad line was to get to the rich land lying inland from the coast to Uganda. It also served as a basis for import-export trade (Ochieng). At a young age, Jomo Kenyatta became the general secretary and editor of the KCA’s (Kikuyu Central Association) newspaper, Muigwithania (The Unifier). During the 1930s Kenyatta campaigns were energetically on a range of linked policies, including land rights, access to education, respect for traditional African representation in the legislative control. In October 1952 there is a sudden outbreak of sabotage and assassination in Kenya. The perpetrators using terrorist tactics are Kikuyu, and their ritual oaths of loyalty to their secret organization reflect the customs of Jomo Kenyatta's political group, the Kikuyu Central Association. But the meaning of their name for themselves, Mau Mau, is at the time and remains today a mystery
