The third topic of discussion is the personal views and beliefs of the Renaissance Man. Document 1 is an excerpt from Machiavelli’s The Prince. Machiavelli states that he believes it better to be feared than loved as a ruler, “...but it is much safer to be feared than loved when one of the two must be chosen. His reasoning behind this preference is supported when he says “Men have fewer principles in going against one who is beloved than one who is feared” because “....fear preserved you by a dread of punishment that never fails.” Machiavelli’s…

The Renaissance was a period which marked the rebirth of classical antiquity with the transition in the Italian world from Scholasticism to Humanism. After the Great Schism which lasted from 1378-1417, and the Bubonic plague in 1438, the European feudal system collapsed. Not only, but also, the reputation of the Church was put under considerable scrutiny, weakening the influence of the Papal states of Christendom. Furthermore, the omnipresence of death brought by the plague in 1438 caused high demand for pleasurable goods, causing people people to have greater focus on enjoying the material world rather than suffer for the spiritual one; therefore, artisans were quickly in high demand, leading more people to live in the cities causing the middle…
On the other hand, the poem, Responsory for the Virgin shows influences similar to the Song of Roland, but in a tone that is less imperialistic. Hilegard of Bingen became a nun in her early adulthood. She was very influential, spreading Christianity through her poetic works. Although trade might have improved the connections between different cultures, the economic revolution also cannot be considered as the greatest revolution of the Renaissance. Similarly to the political revolution the economic revolution failed to unify the two main groups of the society, the rich with the poor. In this case, although the overall nation became closely united with one another it was not the same for the individuals of the nations. Industrialization meant higher production means, which even further widened the gap between social classes. One became worth only as much as he would produce; thus, as the rich had more to invest they were able to consume more later on.…
The Renaissance was a period of advancement in various subjects. It was a time of great intellectual inquiry into all the branches of learning and fields of study. The European Renaissance and Reformation was a pivotal time in history; numerous artists and thinkers from that time had created a new set of ideals that shaped the works of playwrights and poets. The new set of ideals were created by Humanist philosophers and were vastly different from the Medieval and Deterministic ideals that were previously popular. Medieval and Deterministic ideals coincided with the ideas that man was the scum of the Earth and that man would never amount to anything. Man was the lowest of the low. Pope Innocent III went as far as to say, in On the Misery of the Human Condition, that “For sure man was formed out of earth, conceived in guilt, born to punishment.…

1. The term "Renaissance" comes from the French, meaning rebirth. It is a term used to describe the 1400- 1600. Today, the renaissance is viewed as "a profound and enduring upheaval ad transformation in culture, politics, art and, society in Europe." (Brotton, 9) While I believe the term renaissance can be applied to certain aspects of this time period, I don 't believe it should blanket all that occurred in that time period.…
During the Renaissance; England was booming with a new ideology call humanism, which was an interest in classical works and exploring the human potentials. This also effected how everything was being portrayed in day to day life. Art change with a keen interest in details and an emphasis on realism. music change from the typical Gregorian chant to more instruments, and the way of thought eventually followed with the new wave of change. Thomas More would be a very big part of this with his Utopia and the new ideas that went into this book would show how vastly different the Renaissance way of thought was from the thinking of the old with the middle ages slowly fading away and becoming ancient history.…
