Thereupon, I briefly explained my role, indicated the length of time I had to spend with him and then proceeded to broach the issue of confidentiality in a sensitive manner. From the outset, I wanted Phurpa to feel relaxed and comfortable. I also came off as nervous and unsure of myself as a counsellor. Those are several areas that I felt I needed improvement. However, I feel that it would have been more helpful to use different types of questions to demonstrate greater flexibility of which is required in a variety of situations. Throughout the session, I applied a couple of examples in which I reflected the client’s expression of feeling. The purpose of these reflections was to allow Phurpa to ‘hear’ his own thoughts and also to allow him to feel in sightly. ‘You said you were sad…’ was one example of an empathetic response I used in relation to the feelings that Phurpa expressed. Although I found this type of questioning was helpful in identifying the client feeling, but I felt that I performed in a bit clumsily.
Towards the end, I performed the summary with the aim of giving Phurpa a snapshot of the overall conversation.
