A character that I admired throughout the novel was Augustus Waters. Gus (Augustus) is 17 years old and in the novel was recently given the all clear from cancer after having his leg amputated. Despite all the challenges he faced Gus continued to have a positive outlook on life which rubbed off on the people around him, this was no different when he met Hazel. He spread his positivity and his liveliness no matter what was going on with his own condition something that I admire. During the novel Gus sacrifices his own wish to make Hazel’s come true, during this whole time he knew he did not have long to live as his cancer had returned. The messages and issues highlighted throughout the text are also something that is needed to be spread within us as the younger generation. We tend focus too much on ourselves and what others think of us rather than learning to accept not only your own but others differences as after all, without diversity the world would be nothing. This book placed me in a world in which not many have experienced and is something that has truly changed my perspective on cancer and those who face
