This book would be enjoyed by people who like how history shaped America to what it is today and people who are interested in how slavery was affecting America during this time. This book is not for everyone in general. There are some parts that might be boring for the reader if they do not like history or…
At an early age this individual believed that he had an important purpose in life. Nat Turner’s rebellion was a major point in history. He was an African American slave that lived in Southampton, Virginia on a plantation, and later became a spiritual leader throughout the plantation. He initiated a rebellion among the slaves so that he could lead the slaves to a better life.…
Personal Reaction to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a book that has woken me up from a state I am ashamed to have been in in the first place, especially regarding such a sensitive time in our country’s past: indifference. Collectively, our society today has become desensitized to the heinous atrocity of slavery that those before us fell victim to. As a human being with even the slightest sense of morality, I of course vehemently disapprove of slavery and the values in which it was grounded. However, admittedly, my immediate emotional reaction to the word “slavery” prior to my reading of the book was borderline apathetic because our culture is so far removed from the cruelties that those before us were forced to suffer through. This detachment from the concept of slavery,…
Nat Turner Response Paper While I was reading Kyle Baker’s, Nat Turner I had a unique experience in which I was introduced to American Slavery. I was simultaneously very amazed and very surprised by the rebellion that was led by Nat Turner. Nat Turner an enslaved --African American-- who was also a Baptist minister and a religious leader who led a slave rebellion with a group of followers, however; he and a group of other African slaves killed about sixty people who consisted of white men, women, and children. The readers come to grasp the fact that Africans were hunted, shackled, branded, and transported in rat-infested ships; it also depicts the humiliation that they faced and how they were inspected but they were also sold. I will be putting…
Written Words of What Not to Be Slave narratives are extremely valuable for today’s readers because they give a reader a first-person look inside the life of a slave. Slave narratives teach us exactly how daily life was for slaves and allows readers to sympathize for the slave. They teach how cruel and hard life was and remind us how to make sure that we do not repeat history. Olaudah Equiano and Frederick Douglas are two examples of slaves who wrote first-hand experiences of their lives.…
I’ve read all of the slaves narratives and not one particularly stood out more so than the other. They were all equally impactful to me so I randomly choose one. The narrative that was randomly selected was the narrative of Mary Reynolds. Mary Reynold is a former enslaved African from Dallas, Texas. She was enslaved on a plantation in Black River, Louisiana by the Kilpatrick family.…
Rhetorical Analysis of a slave narrative Slavery was an unfortunate and devastating mark on American history. We talk about it and learn about it in classes but it is rare that we read about honest firsthand accounts from actual slaves. The account in question comes from the viewpoint of Tempie Herndon Durham which was saved through the passage of time by the federal writers project which can be found online via the library of congresses online affiliate. This story holds influence not only socially and politically but gives us information on the history and culture of a group of people who had been tried to be silenced which makes its interest fall under the umbrella of everyone in the united states for influencing this country and how…
To begin with, Frederick Douglass focuses on different topics and all are very important. One particular topic he mainly focuses on in my opinion is how the white and slave children are being differently treated. Slave children never knew their biological parents, and white children did know their parents. If there was any white male who had a child of complexions that are darker then the father, the child would be known as a slave. The child that has the same skin complexion as it's slave mother would be known as a slave.…
Wow, this chapter was a big eye opener and not at all what I expected. Like many of my peers one of the things I found the most interesting and shocking was the North and what it was really like to live there. Seeing the header “North of Slavery” had me thinking that this chapter was going to be about the North trying to help the slaves, but I was so wrong. This was the title because this was how historian Leon Litwack described the situation African Americans were in. He described it as “North of Slavery” because no matter where they went they experienced racism and segregation.…
In the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” by Frederick Douglass he illustrates the life and struggles as he was a slave. Douglass tells his story of being born and kept as a slave, and his escape to the North in his early twenties, in a style that depicts the evil he experienced and/or observed in Maryland. Such as, being removed from his mother's care by the age of one, with almost no contact allowed with her for the rest of his life and being clothed as a child only in a knee-length shirt, summer or winter. Also, having no provision for beds or bedding except for a single blanket. Not to forget the atrocities of routine rape of women to increase slaveholders' assets and wealth; which can make anybody’s stomach turn.…
Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…
Frederick Douglass had many turning points and life changing events happen to him early on in his life. He learned how to read and write by a master’s wife, where he eventually taught himself. He also finally gave his cruel slaveholder, Mr. Covey, a taste of his own medicine. Although fighting Mr. Covey had finally given him the courage to stick up for himself to be treated as a human and not as anything less than, I believe that learning how to read and write was the most essential in changing the track of his life because it is what start him off on his new journey to freedom.…
In six chapters Deborah White breaks down the living burdens of racism and sexism black women endured. White breaks down the numerous identities a slave woman showed during the Antebellum South. White gathered interviews, researched examples, events and writings from historical figures that too have also attempted to describe the heinous events black woman dealt with. The chapters all standalone elaborating specific studies in certain aspects of the enslaved women yet all merged as one in complete unity and ease. The overall message of White is clear throughout the book; black women were enslaved by their sex and race.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
