Many times, in the Christian life, one topic can slip through the cracks of thoughtful thinking. One area that seems to be less emphasized is the teaching of the Trinity and its implications to the Christian worldview. Michael Reeves book “Delighting in the Trinity” seeks to end the madness of thinking of the trinity as being cold and boring. Michaels main argument is that “God is love because God is a Trinity”. The point of this response paper is, then, to discuss how this book and its theological implications have impacted the way I think.
The author of this book communicated the topic of the Trinity from a different perspective than I am used to. The emphasis I have had on the Trinity has been God’s oneness. This, I believe, is due to my search to find unity is God’s nature throughout time. I have, sense my conversion, believed in the Trinity and thus know that God the Father operates differently than God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I have spent a great majority of my adult life contemplating God’s sovereignty. This has been lovely and delightful to my mind and has brought much devotion to God, however I seem to have instilled a bent towards neglecting God’s love. It was a wonderful reminder to me that, of course, God is sovereign and creator and ruler but foundationally He is a loving Father. The truth that God the Father, from all of eternity, has been giving life is helpful to my soul as I tend to have the inclination to see Him as foundationally the ruler. I loved what Reeves said on page 28 about the overflowing nature of God. “As the father is the lover and the head of the Son, so the Son goes out to be the lover and head of the church.”. And further, how he explained how this is replicated in marriage was an encouraging
