Causes:
The 5 main causes of WW1 and thus the battle of Vimy Ridge was militarism, alliances, imperialism, nationalism and the spark. To begin with, militarism was the belief in the power of strong armies and navies. This caused many countries to be prepared to fight and obtain strong forces. The second cause of the battle was the alliances. Since there was conflict among the countries France and Germany, each country tried to gain as many alliances for support in case of war. Due to the French and British troops’ failure to claim the ridge, Canadian troops were brought into the battle. The Canadian general Arthur Currie led the charge to claim the ridge and unbelievably in 4 days the Canadians managed to claim the ridge. In the battle, there were many sacrificial and courageous acts and the capture of the ridge was significantly Canada’s first common event in history. In addition, Canada’s military achievements in the battle helped the country become more independent, fall from the shadow of Britain and earn its own identity. This also resulted in Canada shining and getting prosperity on the world stage. Not to forget, the capture of the ridge helped Canada earn a spot in the Paris Peace Conference, prove its worth to the world and gain a separate signature on the peace treaty to end the war. Overall, the battle of Vimy Ridge was significant since it helped Canada become more independent, evolved its identity and helped Canada be known in the
