Reasons For The Failure Of Reconstruction

Reconstruction was the period where United States began to rebuild after the Civil War ended. There were a few plans that were introduced when Reconstruction occurred; Lincoln Plan, Johnson Plan May of 1865, and the Congressional Reconstruction (Radical Republicans). The result of the Lincoln Plan consisted of the population from the South (Confederates) being pardoned of all transgression against the North (Union) if they swore their allegiance to them and the allegiance allowed the state would be allowed to form a new government and send representatives to Congress. The Johnson Plan May of 1865, was similar to the Lincoln Plan but high ranking Confederates and wealthy landowners were to be excluded, everyone except for Texas agreed to the terms. The Congressional Reconstruction created 'Freedom Bureau' which was only planned to last for 18 months but existed 1872, it was created to assist former slaves; the results pushed both races to work together on a different relationship level. …show more content…
There were many problem areas within the process of Reconstruction, one being that there was a lack of effort and attention on the more pressing matters of slavery and the Northern states were preoccupied with the effort that should have been taken to light, but that did not happen and therefore rebuilding the South and bringing it back into the Union did not succeed as well as they thought it would, although all states were readmitted into the Union by 1870. Another reason of failure even though the slaves that were freed seemed to become more accepted racism was allowed to pervade into society. Civil War entailed expansion on the roles and responsibilities of the government that resulted in the ratification of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, which were mostly about equality and protection for slaves.
