Reconstruction was one of the biggest failures in United States History. It was supposed to be one of the most important things to happen to the country after the Civil War, but due to the lack of good leadership, and difficulty of a good compromise between the Democrats and the Republicans, it became a lost cause. The failure of Reconstruction definitely did affect the recently freed African Americans and Republicans. The Civil War was one of the most important events in United States History. It tested America by checking if it can still be preserved after the South seceded. It was a difficult win for the Union, but it was worth it because the Union was restored again. After the Civil War ended, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified and it made slavery illegal. This made the Southerners start the system of sharecropping; people …show more content…
Abraham Lincoln was going help them in the South by giving them land and other support but that ended after he died. The idea of it was completely shut off after the Compromise of 1877. The Compromise of 1877 ended the Reconstruction Era. It gave the Republican, Rutherford B. Hayes the title as president, but in return, they had to remove US troops from the South. This also led to the move of Republicans to the North and that gave more power to the Democrats in the South. The result of that was no one could defend the African Americans in the South and that became a big problem. It was a big problem because the Southern governments began to disobey the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Segregation started and grandfather clauses and also literacy tests were given out in the South to prevent African Americans from voting. Segregation continued through the 20th Century and it almost took 100 years for the African Americans to obtain the rights they were supposed to have in the
