Three-dimensional details were added and settings consist of three walls and an invisible fourth wall. The stage was set up to appear realistic. Most locations were indoors, often in one room , a living room or bedroom which looked transplanted from a common home. Costumes were toned down and looked like everyday clothes. This continued the realism theme. Why did theatre goers and playwrights become enthralled with realism and continue to enjoy it.? If we look at the historical events of the period, the public was affected by world events of great devastation and daily anxiety. Radio broadcasts and newspapers ensured that the population was alerted and aware of current events. Realism in theatre started as an experiment and took hold and became popular and still maintains that popularity. The twentieth century was a violent century, with back to back World Wars followed by the Korean war and the Vietnam Conflict. Public terror was increased even further by the assassination of several public figures.. Financial systems collapsed to add to the societal calamities. She is pushing Brick to get her pregnant to give them an advantage. Underneath the emotional turmoil lies the tragic death of Brick’s best friend at his own hand and hints at homosexual love. Williams brought to the stage multiple conflicts which were not discussed in society at that time. He showed the audience the realities of family conflict, intensity of sibling rivalry , male friendships which may have been a mask for homosexual love. Elia Kazan compelled Williams to change his original script for film goers. The original play ending suggested that Maggie and Brick might end up in divorce. In the altered ending Brick defended Maggie and hinted she might be
