Zerlina Maxwell explains this phenomenon in her Time article, ‘Rape Culture is Real’. Having been a survivor of rape herself, Zerlina uses her and other survivors’ opinions and experiences in her article. The most memorable of which was, “Rape culture is when people say, ‘she was asking for it.’” (Zerlina). In this quote, people shift the blame for somehow making the man believe she wanted to have sex with him even if she does not onto the woman. Maybe she wears a skirt above the knee or just does not say ‘No’ loud enough. Either way, the fault falls not with the rapist, but with the survivor. Zerlina argues in her article that rape culture is a societal norm. A study done by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control found that 20% of the women in America have suffered rape or a rape attempt in their life which Zelina uses in the question, ¨Is 1 in 5 American women surviving rape or attempted rape considered a cultural norm?¨ (Zerlina). Many victims of rape are too afraid to accuse their rapists; they’re too afraid of how others will shame them. Lakshmi and the other girls experience rape every day the spend in the brother. Victims of rape are sometimes led to believe it was their fault that the horrific crime occurred. This is utterly disgusting to even try to pin the blame on the victim. Victims of rape are not at fault. A person's attire, looks, alcohol consumption, sexuality, gender, and/or race does not give anyone permission to take advantage of them. There is no excuse for anyone to commit such a despicable crime. Victims are sometimes ridiculed and looked down upon and this must stop. A change of culture needs to take place and victims of rape need to be treated with respect and dignity and not as the reason the assault took place. Blaming a victim has become common in sexual assault cases and this victim blaming needs to end NOW! Someone that has been…

The police who are interviewing the victims needs to stay away from the myths about rape victims that have been pushed on society by the media. The police have to have caring attitudes. The myths about the victims could cause the victim to have a “second rape” or question if the rape was partly their fault. The tendency to blame rape victims makes it easier for people to explain why these attacks are so prominent. It is easier to find an excuse to why someone got raped than to recognize our own vulnerability or to rationalize why the assailant conducted such a vulgar act. The Just World Hypothesis explains that women get raped not because of the fault of others but because it is a way for the universe to “even” out the playing field (Rape Crisis Information Pathfinder, n.d.). “The greater harm means that harshly punishing the perpetrator isn’t sufficient to restore a ‘just world.’ To do that, we may need to cast the victim as partially responsible (Benforado, 2016, p.18).” In this quote Benforado summarizes The Just World Hypothesis in a way such that we subconsciously justify rape is by punishing the perpetrator along with blaming the victim. So not only do victims of sexual assault get labeled as drunk or slutty or asking for trouble, but it is also easier to blame them for what happened to explain the occurrence of rape and sexual…

Men are more dominant in our society. Even we do not want to admit it, but it is a brutal truth. Most famous football player are males. Most CEOs are males. Most presidents are males. Even in modern society, men can have several wives in some countries. Although our society claims women should be treated equally as men, women still be considered as subhuman in many cases. Human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual assault still happen around the world all the time and women are the main victims of these crimes. In the social construction of hyper masculinity, people think only man is the ruler of the world. Woman is mere the tool for reproduction and is appendix to the man. This idea puts women in weak positions in the rape culture. Perpetrators sexual assault women because they think women are less valuable than men in this social construction of hyper masculinity. In this society, men have many privileges than women. Male criminals even don’t pay for their…

The Office for National Statistics (ONS), after asking people if rape was the victim's fault, found that “more than one third of interviewees insisted sex attack victims bore partial responsibility if they had been “flirting heavily beforehand”” (Barrett). We are sitting on years and years of social progression and advancement, yet we insist on taking two steps back every time we move in the right direction. This, as stated before, plays an important role in court cases involving sexual assault. For example, Canadian Judge Robin Camp asked the victim of a sexual assault case why she couldn’t “just keep [her] knees together” (Chappell). His comment contributes to the obvious fact that misogyny in victim-blaming still exists and needs to…

Living in a society where victim blaming in rape cases has become a social norm when exploring rape culture as a whole. Focusing primarily on victim blaming, research can provide evidence of inequalities in the criminal justice system that impacts the sentencing of perpetrators. Common aspects seem from victim blaming is creditable of the victim, perpetrator’s race, and/or class, and patriarchy has all influence sentencing in regards to the guilty party. In fact, cultures of patriarchy have shown “higher level of female sociopolitical power tended to experience higher rates of rape and the lower proportion of rape cases cleared by arrest” (Johnson, 2014). As well as, when “female involvement increased…

The problem with America’s rape culture is that we believe that there isn’t one. Where in fact, 1 out of every 5 women in America has been a victim of rape or sexual assault as of 2015. We live in a country where the accusations of the victim are often considered false, made up in order to receive money and attention. Where the attacker is deemed an innocent man, free to roam the streets looking for his next victim; meanwhile, the one before is corrupted beyond repair, nearly as much as American Justice itself.…

Sexual intercourse plays the most important role in keeping humankind alive, yet it’s violated severely through prostitution, pornography, premarital sex, adultery, masturbation, and the worst offense of all: rape. Despite rape being a grave violation of the human body through force of sexual actions without consent, the judicial branch of the United States government seems to have no care in the matter whatsoever. The people of our generation seem only to care about this curse when it directly affects them. Somehow, we allow these monsters less to no jail time for their crimes, usually do with the fact that they attempt to make it about themselves and that,” They were the real victims”. Society views regarding rape are so distorted, we…

The cultural construction of rape, or rape culture, is a somewhat misunderstood term in mainstream society. Many people shy away from the expression because it seems at first glance to demonize all men as evil predators. In reality, however, rape culture refers to a much broader social phenomenon that addresses both men and women. In an article for the Globe and Mail, for instance, Jordan Venton-Rublee defines a rape culture as “the environment that puts the onus on the victim, not the perpetrator”. Marshall University Women’s Centre also addresses the concept on their website, establishing that while rape culture does largely refer to victim blaming, it also can be seen more broadly as “an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which…

Victim blaming is present in almost every rape case documented. Women who are sexually assaulted in anyway are often asked either if they were drinking too much, what clothes they were wearing, whether she was walking alone at night, or even if she had a weapon with her to defend herself. Rape is not and never will be the victims’ fault. Women should be able to dress however they want without being afraid that they will get judgmental looks, stares from hormonal men or even disapproval looks from fellow women. People who say that women should cover up because if they do not they might distract males, are telling ladies that they should be ashamed for their basic human anatomy. Women have breasts, legs and shoulders that could be exposed by wearing short shorts and a halter-top or they could be wearing a bed sheet that covers their whole body. It is not their fault that men cannot control themselves. It is not their fault that some people are distracted by what they wear. It is not their fault that some men choose to catcall, harass or sexually violate them. There is also a big debate on when it comes to rape when the victim is intoxicated by alcohol. Drunk or not the victim is still not responsible! The victim is clearly unable to give any kind of consent whatsoever. Lets take the Steubenville case in which two boys were found guilty of raping a girl a 16-year-old girl while she was unconscious and intoxicated. The mainstream media attacked the victim and accused her of ruining their future careers since the boys were loved athletes in their school. People were present during the rape incident and no one ever said anything. Instead, they took pictures, laughed, filmed and even tweeted it and yet people still blame the victim for something she could not do anything about. The way you dress or sobriety does not prevent rape. People are raped all around the world regardless of what they are…

When american culture thinks of rape, women are immediately the victims that come to one's mind. We’ve painted a picture that says, women are initially the one gender that can be raped, and if we were to think a man could get raped by a women. It would be absolutely ridiculous to think a women could overpower a man. We have adapted to live in a civilization that romantics about masculinity. Unfortunately in the process we’ve turned a blind eye to smallest anticipation that a man can be raped by a women as well. Male rape should not be funny joke to laugh about, it should be a comfortable subject we can speak about without falling to a misleading hole of myths and in order to do this we must first diminish these mere myths.…
