Same Bigotry? Two different stories, but they have the same message. Two different girls, living through the same type of injustice. W.E.B. Du Bois said “To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollar is the very bottom…”. He was saying that if you were colored and lived in a place where whites that have money are also living, you were at the very bottom of society, whites basically ruled you. In The Help, discrimination is a huge problem. Black maids that worked for white families were very often mistreated. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the whites often mistreated black men and discriminated against them because they were thought poorly of and it was easy to pick on the blacks because white people had the mindset that negroes were of little to no importance. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a white woman is accusing a black man of rape, and in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, a white woman 's word was always favored over a black man’s word. In The Help, white families hire black women as maids and a lot of times, the maids were discriminated against because they were in Jackson, Mississippi where the people were very racist. Scout and Skeeter both witness discrimination where they live and their reactions show a lot about their moral beliefs. Scout’s moral beliefs show that everyone should be treated equal and when she sees the court discriminate against Tom, she becomes very angry. Scout is taking to Atticus and she is asking him what the term “nigger-lover”…
