What gives a person the right to hate another person(s) just because they are not the same color? People think that since they are a different color, that they are different and deficient people. Some people think racism is just natural and people are born with it, but others may think that they have learned it from family and others in their life, or even a combination of both. People are racist because of what they have been taught, not because they were born that way.…

Twenty fourteen will be the year this is made clear to everyone: racism is not simply personal prejudice/bigotry that only manifests in the form of being unkind to someone on the basis of their skin color or calling them a derogatory name. Racism is a system of oppression, one that creates a society of first- and second-class citizens by denying rights and access to resources to non-white people. Racism is a system of power created by and maintained through public policy. Racist rhetoric or action is anything that reinforces/upholds that system. So until the day comes when the US government enacts laws aimed specifically and purposefully at ensuring that white people are shut out of education/healthcare/jobs/housing and shuttled into prison…

Racism has been an obstacle in almost every person of color’s life. Although race is typically not the most important conflict in a person’s life, the color of my skin can retain me from reaching important goals and dreams l could achieve if my skin were of whiter complexion. Growing up my family was rich in our Mexican culture and encouraged my siblings and me to speak Spanish around the house. Going to school in America and being educated in facilities where only English was allowed prevented me from assimilating into my culture as my parents had wished. Nevertheless, Spanish was my first language but I quickly became accustomed to English.…

Why is race important? Race, like many other things, in America typically determines what kind of life an individual will live; whether they will live a life of privilege or a life of fear. Which brings up the question: What makes race important? Is race important because society pressures their citizens to identify with a certain culture or is it because for some people it can influence their entire lives.…

While most people think obstacles are a disadvantage I truly believe they can be turned into an advantage. Generally speaking, the most common obstacle anybody goes through is racism. It occurs everywhere, specifically at work and businesses environments. To illustrate, according to The American Dream is Still; Just a Dream For Most Minorities by Philip M.Deutsch, a MIT and University of Chicago School of Business research group made a test “to determine whether applicants with black-sounding names received fair treatment while applying for jobs..... Applicants with “white sounding names” received 50 percent more responses from companies than their black-sounding counterparts with equal credentials.”…

I really appreciate that you brought up how subtle racism can be. I think its something we as a society fail to address and we tend to look for more grand gestures of racism, such as from the Jim Crow era, when even the subtle forms can be harmful. You also say that in order to address racism we must, "raise awareness of the forms of racism that are present in our society" and "Also, systematic racism can be addressed through policy and legal changes.". This is all amazing, but how are you going to address it on a person to person or…

As long as humans have inhabited the earth there have been interpersonal problems due to a variety of personalities that will not always fraternize well. The problem I wish to eradicate is racism. It slithers through our minds and poisons are thoughts and incapacitates our reason. It deceives us, and causes us believe in ridiculous ideas. I always think back to times in history class, when we talk about times of extreme racism, such as the Holocaust, slavery and racism in America.…

“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” This was the first sentence of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. On August 28, 1963 during the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial, he calls for more equal treatment for all Americans by calling for an end to racism in the United States. We can respond to and eradicate racism only through a peaceful stand for the love for humanity. As a young citizen aware of violence in our nation and throughout the globe, I will promote solutions to the conflict of racism by confronting racism in myself, my community, and my nation.…

During high school, every student must learn the chilling history about the people who were forced to be slaves, the civil rights movement, and everything in between. The thought that people were killed because of their skin color is truly mind boggling, and thinking about how different things are now, it doesn 't seem like it could ever be as rough as it was in the past. But, throughout the years, things have changed, and African Americans now have the basic human rights that they deserve. However, within the past five years, people have been arguing that racism is alive more than ever, and that things haven 't changed at all from the past. Of course it may seem that way, considering technology has advanced, and small acts of racism are broadcasted…

For a while now I’ve been meaning to share my thoughts and opinions with the world around me, but each time my fingers skim the surface of my laptop my heart rate speeds up, my throat tightens, my palms begin to sweat and all I can think about is the possibility that I might be the only person feeling the way I do. With that said, as I sit and share my thoughts in my dimly lit room, I do so with no intentions of offending anyone who might read this. To be honest, I do not expect many to read the thoughts that I will convey today. I share these thoughts merely as way for me to make sense of all that I have experienced over the past few months and to mentally prepare myself for all I will be facing in the future. While you may not know my name,…
