“Racism in the United States is a large issue, and Americans say racism is a bigger problem today than at any point in the past 20 years” (Ingraham). Many forms of society is to blame, such as the media, music, and films. Racism has been addressed many times throughout the decades, but it is still a lingering issue within the society between Whites and Blacks.
Racism dates back to the 17th century. In 1619 slaves were brought from Africa and forced to do manual labor in dehumanizing conditions. Slavery was a huge controversy in the United States, therefore, the North made slavery illegal in 1787. This started the end of slavery in the United States. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise banned slavery north of the southern boundary of Missouri. Slavery in the South resulted in numerous slave revolts. The Dred Scott case in 1857 stated that Congress does not have the power to ban slavery in states and that slaves are not citizens. In 1861, the Civil War begins and after the Battle of Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation, the war is about slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by Abraham Lincoln, freed all slaves within the Confederate states. In 1865 the Civil War comes to an end and the 13th Amendment is ratified, which prohibited slavery. Over the next couple of years, the government tried to help the former slaves but Whites continued to have a sense of entitlement. A group of White people formed the Ku Klux Klan who went out to beat up and kill Blacks for no reason. During the 1900s, segregation became a popular topic. Many supreme court cases were based on the issue such as Plessy vs. Ferguson and Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. Mike did not have the best life, until one cold night when it would be changed forever. He attended a basketball game to scrounge for leftover food from the spectators after the game had concluded. Mr. Tuohy notices what he is doing and provides him with a meal ticket (Synopsis for The Blind Side). Michael had no clue that the Tuohy’s would imprint a big impact on him by the simple act of kindness. A few days later, Mike was walking down the road on a very chilly night to where he was sleeping, which was that same gym that he had the encounter with the family just nights ago. The Tuohy’s were driving home and noticed that Michael was walking outside in the ice and snow. They pulled over and asked him where he was going and he responded that he was going to the gym to sleep because it was the only place he could go that was warm. With sympathy and respect, Leigh Anne offers Michael a ride to their home so he could have a nice place to sleep for the night. The next morning, Leigh Anne wakes to find the sheets and blankets that Mike slept on neatly folded on the couch. She runs outside and sees Michael walking
