This historical event begins at 1619, when slavery first started in North America, according to the Passage "Slavery in America". First of all before we get started slavery is the state of being a slave. Slavery started in a colony in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619 to aid their crops. According to Ellis Latashi, during 1846, David Wilmot made the "Wilmot Proviso" that banned slavery in the new land{Western lands}.Later, in the 1850's the Compromise of 1850 was made instead of the "Wilmot Proviso" that caused a lot of debate. after the compromise, the Fugitive Slave Act took place, which is when a officer finds a runaway slave, they must arrest him/her or else they will be fined. This only led to efforts against slavery. Then in 1854, the Kansas and Nebraska act was passed which allowed the two states to choose if they wanted to be a free state or not. Then in 1856, congress man Preston brooks, who was proslavery, attacked Charles Sumner for his speech against proslavery in Kansas. Then came the Dred Scott decision in 1857, which was about a colored man that lost his freedom. Then according to Oregon Public Broadcasting, one of the main issues of the Civil War was States' Rights. This was because the southerners wanted to destroy laws that interfered with them keeping their right of keeping their slaves. Then there was the western territories that the southerners
