As with anything humility is a necessary part of being a good hero, an overzealous hero can be blinded by the strive for fame, consequently leading to the attitude that they are capable of doing everything. However, a hero that is willing to ask for help is a humble one, because they know that even they aren’t above everything. Hiram Hillburn knows that he too needs help. After discovering, that R.C. Rydell, and two other men were going up to Money, Mississippi to teach a northern boy of color a lesson, Hiram knew what that meant and called the sheriff for help. “I went into the kitchen and called the sheriff’s office. My hand shook a little as I dialed the phone. Sheriff Smith wasn’t there, so I ended up talking to one of his deputies. I told him everything R.C. had said” (106). At this point Hiram knew he wouldn’t be able to stop R.C. by himself so he called the sheriff’s office in hopes of saving Emmet from being hurt by R.C. and the other two men. Hiram looked past himself and did what he felt would be best for Emmet, even though he knew if he did help save Emmett he wouldn’t get the credit. He did what he could to help, not to gain fame. Finally, and most importantly is the fortitude to do what is right, even when it is scary. It’s the ability to do what benefits the greater good. Miram exhibits this trait most frequently of the three. After being subpoenaed to court
