Sexual Education

In tenth grade, I had two days of sexual education in my health class. They consisted of our teacher telling us how if you had sex before you were married, you would contract an STD or get pregnant. He said this as an absolute; there was no chance that these things wouldn’t happen to you. He then showed us slides of what different sexually transmitted diseases looked like, and that was the extent of my public school sexual education. This is a huge problem because at some point everyone has to learn about “the birds and the bees.” There have been many debates about how or even if sexual education should be taught in public high schools, and if it should be taught, there is even more disagreement on at what age and in what manner it should be …show more content…
While initially this claim makes sense, once you do even a little bit of research you find this not to be true. In 2007, two different studies were published about the effects of abstinence-only programs versus comprehensive programs. The first study conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that abstinence-only courses did not promote abstinence at all. In fact, students that took these courses were compared to a control group who had no sexual education classes, and both groups had the about the same number of sexual partners and the same age of their first sexual encounter (Malone). This study proves that the type of sexual education many students are currently receiving is having the same kind of outcome as if our students were receiving no sexual education whatsoever. Both groups in this study had alarming rates of unprotected sexual intercourse which can lead to all of the things we are trying to avoid by giving our children sexual education courses. The other study produced more unsurprising data this time involving students receiving comprehensive courses. The 40 percent of the students who received comprehensive sexual education had their first sexual encounters significantly later than their peers in the abstinence-only courses. Also the students in comprehensive cases had a

At same time, it is advisable that programs teach all age appropriate material about safe sex to students. Why do Abstinence-only program not teach students the importance of safe sex, or the possible impact of sexually transmitted diseases? In addition the program is lacking in the area of education on teen pregnancy. “Statistics show that roughly one in four girls will become pregnant at least once by their 20th birthday.…

This is a “scare” tactic, by no means does it teach safe sex education to adolescents. These are just some of the things my sex education lacked. I was not in grade school that long ago, a reference for you to see how this must be addressed now. My sex education class only consisted of healthy eating habits, resisting drugs, and why not to drink. Fortunately, I had parents who understood and were informed of the things they need to talk to me about, I received a comprehensive sex education from my parents, not at school.…

abstinence – only – until – marriage programs” there was a study done that was dealing with abstinence only education and there were results that indicated abstinence only education did not increase rates of sexual abstinence (Malone, Rodriguez 5). The surprising thing they found out was that there was a similarity between children who received abstinence only education and children who did not receive any sexual health education when it came to number of sexual partners (Malone, Rodriguez 5). Children were having unprotected sexual intercourse with abstinence only education. While with comprehensive sexual health education it “had at least one positive sexual effect” (Malone, Rodriguez 5). There was “40 percent of comprehensive programs examined” and the results were that there were “three important effects of delaying the initiation of sexual intercourse, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use” that were achieved (Malone, Rodriguez 5).…

A 2006 study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that among U.S. high schools, eighty-seven percent taught abstinence while only eleven percent taught safe sex (Abiona, 2012). Statistics shows teens are having more sex, so regarding that information safe sex education should be reinforced. In 2012, The Guttmacher Institute released data and information that sex education not only helps young adults delay intercourse, but also has a positive impact on other decisions when they do, such as partner selection (Abiona, 2012).”For example, take a student that has been educated all throughout high school about abstinence, safe sex, as well as sexually transmitted diseases, and he/she attends a college as a freshman. As of October 2015, the Guttmacher Institute, a New York-based research organization, found that twenty-two states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education -- and eighteen require that information on contraception be provided (Toppo). With only twenty-two states and the District of Columbia mandating sex education, so many young adults and students are missing out on the proper education they need to make decisions about their sex lives. The United States is failing these young people by not mandating that sex education be taught. Forty-eight states do not mandate sex education and these kids are growing up to suffer. They are suffering from STD’s, HIV and AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, and more, but this could be changed with a…

A survey should read that one hundred percent of teenagers have received a sex talk from their parents. The truth of the matter is that a survey conducted by Planned Parenthood on teenagers who have not received a formal comprehensive sex education class shows that only forty-two percent of parents have talked to their teenagers about sex. Only forty-two percent, leaving fifty-eight percent of teenagers in the dark and uninformed, leaving them more susceptible to unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. As one can see, there is a need for comprehensive sex education classes in all high schools, because teenagers do not need to be deprived of the essential information provided in the…

Unfortunately abstinence-only education fails to reach 100% of teens. As Watkins states, Abstinence-only sex education doesn’t work. There is little evidence that teens who participate in abstinence-only programs abstain from intercourse longer than others. When they do become sexually active, though, they often fail to use condoms or other contraceptives. Meanwhile, students in comprehensive sex education classes do not engage in sexual activity more often or earlier, but do use contraception and practice safer-sex more consistently when they become sexually active.…
