Chicago was able to achieve this by involving senators in the fight, believing whole heartedly in their democratic public sector union and shedding light on how the system manipulates education workers; by using them as a scapegoat for issues in the education system. These strategies were effective because they did have more support and power on their side. Having senators on their side, who have a say in legislation and government, gave the working class a higher level of power, as they are able to look out for the workers on a political scale. The tactics used by Chicago teachers worked because like discussed in lecture; public sector workers, affect the public (Gray, slide 15). A effective strategy for the unions to use is the ‘good work’ strike (Gray, slide 15).…
The city of Smithville is faced with a difficult financial circumstance. The situation is partly due to a general business slump in the state that had affected the city’s revenue. City officials resisted demands for pay raises from the police, fire, and other city employees. Union leaders were critical of the city official’s financial decision making. City Manager Harmsworth acknowledge that budget cuts were inevitable in order to gain control of the financial situation.…
General Overview: Resentment among the working class has been growing in Winnipeg for several years. Unions (employees) complained that Government supported employers over workers. In the spring of 1919, the Winnipeg metal and building trades began negotiations with their employers. As they usually demand for higher wages and an eight- hour workday, the unions demanded the right to collective bargaining - to negotiate on behalf of their members rather than each worker negotiating for him or herself. The employers refused to considered their demands, then approximately 30 000 people walked out in general strike on 15 may 1919.…

Sometime the strikes lasted a long time and of course when people go on strikes against their employers, they don’t usually go back to work unless they get what the asked for. Some strikes were by people who were bold, determined, and had huge sympathy for a large part of their community (Doc B). Different type of labor unions back then were too busy to even notice what was going on with the workers. They were to busy fighting against each other because there was a huge labor interest back then so they would miss out on what was going on with the workers that were already working (Doc F). Some of the strikes that the workers went on were deadly.…
This year alone there have been over twenty mass shootings (“2018 School Shootings”, Para. 1). Mass shootings have been a major problem for decades, it all started with the shooting at Columbine the most famous one. Ever since that shooting things have been spiraling out of control with no fix. The fix that we have needed for decades was arming teachers. Teachers should most definitely be armed because it would prevent more people from being killed, deter shooters from entering schools in the first place, and increase school safety overall.…

Canada’s labour movement has a long history with the ultimate goal of improving workers’ everyday lives. Workers fought for the rights enjoyed by all workers today – minimum wages, overtime pay, workplace safety standards, maternity and parental leave, vacation pay, and protection from discrimination and harassment. This history – which is still an ongoing struggle – has been one of enormous obstacles that required passion and commitment. The National Film Board’s short film As Friend and Foe sheds light on the Canadian government’s role in labour relations during the last century.…
There were a lot of different things that happened and a lot of change in the Gilded Age but one major thing that changed in the Gilded Age is the employer, employee relationship. Industrial capitalization was on the rise and the United States was on its way to becoming the world’s industrial leader. This big rise in the economy and low government involvement in industry is what possibly drove employers to maximize profit by using “scientific management”, lowering wages, heightening work hours, not providing a safe work place, and having women and children work in harsh conditions for lower pay. All of these problems sometimes resulting in many violent strikes and even lockouts, which eventually forever changed employer, worker relationship…
The rights consciousness that emerged out of the American civil rights movement arose mainly out of the public sector workforce, as workers felt they were not receiving the type of benefits the government should have been offering them, which led to an abandonment of the original trade unions and instead created new collective organization. “From the early 1960s onward, the most legitimate… defense of America job rights would be found not through collective initiative… but through an individual 's claim to his or her civil rights.” This quote, taken from State of the Union, represents the transformation the American labor movement had when laborists decided not to fight through unions, but instead use a rights consciousness which provided the base for them to fight the government through strikes in order to keep up with the improving private sector employment conditions. Public employees felt they were not being treated…
Generally, the charter school is known for going there because students choose to. Stereotypically, some people think that it is a type of school for people with a lot of money. Some might even think that it is a school for kids that get kicked out of public schools and have nowhere else to go. Controversial and experimental teaching styles. It has also been thought that charter schools have more funding than public schools, but little do they know that it is the other way around.…
These employees won’t have representation or support. The public workers will have support and representation from the union who support employees’ rights. Sometimes paying dues for union membership is worth it because people get more job security and support. During the bargaining, the public employees will have an open negotiation, which can highlight TV news, the private sector’s negotiations might not even exist. The authority to commit the collective bargaining agreement can be shared by the executive and legislative branches, and sometimes three parties will involve in the negotiation.…
Unions have two distinct viewpoints: the business and the union viewpoint (Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008). These two viewpoints help to forge the relationships within individual corporations that can impact the collective bargaining process. However, when it comes to unions differences can exist within public and private sector unions. This is why having a good understanding of the negotiating process and some of the various organizational leadership competencies can be an important aspect of unions (Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008).…
