The research question for the pre-service teaching program topic is “Are Teachers Fully Prepared to Teach in Urban Education?” Previous classes and articles I have read leads me to question if teachers enter the education field prepared to teach in urban education classrooms. When questioning if teachers are prepared for urban settings, I am strictly referring to being prepared culturally and socially. Statistics reveal there is a high rate of teacher turnover for new teachers that teach in urban schools. An overcrowded classroom can lead to more disciplinary issues, and makes it harder for teachers and students to develop a relationship. Theses obstacles in overcrowded classes contribute to the achievement gap between minority and white students. Although, it has been proven that all students’ benefit from smaller class sizes, some children are able to function in large classes and not suffer academically. However, many students need a more intimate setting for them to thrive academically.
Considering the issues that many urban students face inside and outside of the classroom, these children may benefit more from smaller class sizes. In small classrooms, children who are behind academically could receive individual attention that meets their specific needs, and develop a close and healthy relationship with their teachers. On a larger scale, smaller classrooms could aid in closing the achievement gap between minority and white students.
Conclusion
Overall, my goal for this research paper is to further my knowledge in the field of education. My focus is on urban education, specifically new teachers or class size. However, I may need to adjust the research questions, so it could be more specific and meaningful. In general, I am excited to learn more about both of these topics because they are related to my field, could improve my practice and focuses on the population of students I
