Power can mean and represent different things to different types of people. For example, some people see power as being corrupt and shameful. On the other hand for other people power may be seen as the more power someone has, the more successful and important they feel about their self’s. However, for even others, Power is seen as of no interest what so ever.
There are five different types of power in leadership. These five types where identified by John French and Bertram Raven. Their study showed how different types of power can affected someone’s leadership ability and success in a leadership role. These five types of power in leadership have been divided into two different categories, the Formal power and the Personal power.
In the formal power categories it consists of three different types of power in leadership. The coercive, the reward and the legitimate type of power. The coercive type of power can be conveyed thought your own fear of losing a placement or losing your job, made redundant, getting demoted, receiving negative feedback, etc. This power is gotten through threatening others. An example of this is, the VP of Sales who threatens sales folks to meet their goals or get replaced. The coercive style is most effective when a team or an organisation is facing a crisis.
An advantage of using the coercive style is that the team leader has most of the control in what is happening throughout their business. The team leader provides a path and demanding conformance…
