Superheroes have drawn the attention of young mind for countless generations and the recent superhero movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, was no exception. However, before it entered theaters, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was well advertised by posters like this one. Potter’s movie poster is aimed at intriguing any passerby and persuading him to attend the movie. The poster uses a few simple lighting and color techniques to catch the eye of the viewer as well as reveal the movies basic message. Potter also uses the poster to set up the movies storyline, but only reveals enough details that the viewers are left curious and intrigued. He uses it to add a seemingly subliminal contrast between the forces of good and evil. The majority of the poster is done in darker colors, even a tint of dark red was added to the skyline, to resent the glow of the burning city. Theses darker toned colors, which surround the villains of the movie, accentuate the presence of darkness, evil, and trouble. In contrast to the general darkness, the center of the poster is brightened by the presence of the Avengers. By lightening the colors around the superheroes, the viewer will generally associate the feelings of joy, hope, and peace with them. Therefore, by using this light contrast, the viewer, without being familiar with the Avengers, or the fact that the poster is for a superhero movie, is able to see that the movie will be over a group of good individuals, presumably standing up against the forces evil. In fact, the viewer will easily see that all of the characters in the poster are armed and are prepared to fight, so he or she can reasonably infer, that the movie will be over a conflict between good and evil. This conflict naturally draws on the conscience of the viewer and his or her thoughts go out for the residence of the burning city that is seen on the edges of the poster. To be a successful poster, it must be able to catch the eye of a viewer as he or she is walks by. The first thing that catches the viewer's eye is the giant blue lightning bolt that cuts across the poster. The blue flash of lighting, coming from Thor’s hammer, stands out from the overall darker scene. After the lighting snags the viewers’ attention, his eyes are averted directly into the glowing red eyes of the robotic supervillain. The glowing eyes of the robotic supervillain immediately captivate the viewer, and he or she is intrigued to further look at the poster. Although Potter’s poster has very few words, it seems to tell a story that once the viewer looks, he or she must understand. In the middle of the scene the menacing supervillain stares out over a burning city and building rubble. Behind him are flying robots that appear to be causing the city’s destruction. The viewer immediately is able to see this group of robots must be the “bad guys” and that they must stopped. In the foreground of the poster the Avengers all stand together. They appear bound together and ready to stand behind each other and fight for the good of all. However, the viewer may realize that the Avengers are not facing the “bad guys” who are behind them; instead, they are facing the same direction.
