In Italy, strikes, peasants seizing land, and unrest propagated throughout. The Fascist regime implemented a rule that provided all of its people, even those participating in strikes, with a purpose for the country. The Fascists declared that all of its people were necessary for the success of Italy, and this rhetoric, along with fear, abated the need for uprisings. Today, European governments have created extensive welfare states that provide struggling citizens with benefits allowing them to live in comfort. Citizens do not have the need to fall under authoritarian regimes who promise safety because their government is already assisting and providing for them. As well, the EU ensures citizens’ rights, so citizens would not need authoritarian governments to do this instead. In Germany, the Nazi regime enacted a social policy of uniting all ethnic Germans under a singular government, Anschluss, and Lebensraum, all of which predicated on the invasion of nearby countries. Western countries countered the Nazi invasions with a policy of appeasement in an attempt to prolong the start of the impending war. As countries appeased Germany longer, they created more time to strengthen their economy and military in order to combat the Nazis. Because the EU creates a high economic interdependence, countries could immediately combat authoritarian regimes before they expand and
