Political reasons were a crucial contribution to British imperialism in America. These political ambitions were deeply rooted in nationalism and a sense of patriotism. Moreover, because the Europeans were constantly engaging in warfare, the British believed that expansion of borders would increase the might of the country and the empire. Expansion of borders could not be attained within Europe since all land had been conquered. They, therefore, required new land that was unclaimed for this expansion of their empires. In addition, military strength could be achieved by recruiting more soldiers from the colonies such as America and securing strategic positions on the continent that would give them an advantage over their enemies during warfare. This benefit could be achieved by certain activities such as setting up naval bases in these strategic locations. Lastly, it provided the exploited working class with a distraction from their terrible living conditions, which helped to contain unexpected political uprisings (Johnson, 2002).
