There has been a new war going on for the past years between the communities of New York and the New York Police Department. This is followed by steady citizen complaints against more aggressive NYPD officers during the past several years and the continuing impunity for many officers who commit human rights violations despite the recent reorganization of both the civilian review board and the police department 's internal affairs bureau. “In August 1997, after the alleged torture of Haitian immigrant Abner Louima by police officers made national headlines and outraged city residents, the anti-crime record of the mayor and police department was tarnished.” There are many cases of police using excessive force or corruption within a department and even debates on whether high speed pursuits are necessary(Deshon 2014). Could it be that officers may not have a full comprehension of their oath of office or the ethical code they attained; it could also be that they are corrupt cops. An officer goes through training and in doing so is also educated on the ethical behaviors and oath of an officer. Our police agencies all take the same oath. This oath can be adjusted as appropriate for nations, countries or governments; this oath is worded as” On my honor, I will never betray my profession, my integrity, my character or the public trust.
