The subculture is formed by the realities of the officers. The norms and culture of a correction officer include always go to the aid of your fellow officers in distress, never embarrassed you fellow officer in front inmates, always back fellow officers against inmates and don’t lug drugs.(Pollock 2013:182) Correction officers build a relationship called a structured conflict which the relationship between the correction officers and the inmates. (Jacobs and Kraft 1978:178) According to the author the term structural conflict refers to the relationship between the correction officer and the inmates. The correction officers believe they can be friendly with inmates but the inmates can’t be trusted. There are some situations when a correctional officer have to use force on inmates who chooses not to follow the rule s of the institution and violate a correctional officer, a correction officer may use force on inmates when breaking up fights within the institution. However it is considered violent and unlawful when a correction officer uses violence beyond what is allowed by the institution. Some correctional officers believe they are in control within their section of the institution. According to the author some officers have a mindset of control and have been known to state. “The Christian in me say’s its wrong but the correction officer in me say I love to make a grown man piss on himself.” (Pollock 2013:189) In 1994 there was a random study conducted which consists of inmates survey collected showed evidence of abuse by correction officers towards inmates across the country. Many prisons will not allow the survey and others that would allow the survey however required the correction officer to read each survey before it is mailed. (Hamm, Coupez,Hoze and Weinstein 1994: 189) The prisons have created special response teams. The special response team is to help reduce injuries to correction officers and inmates. This team is equivalent to the SWAT team. According to the author there have been situation were there have been a hostage
