While I was in the Army there was strong demand for a structured work environment. This is something I desire in a career and feel that corrections as other professions in law enforcement demand high level of structure and expect nothing less. To attain this expectation requires individuals to be highly disciplined, so they are able to give 100 percent every moment they are not only on the clock, but when you’re on your own time as well. Some examples that come to the top of my head are working longer if needed, taking the time to not just listen to other, but at the same time trying to the best of one’s ability to seek a common ground solution. Being a correctional officer comes with an immense amount of responsibly, in comparison to other entry-level career fields. This requires just like being a NCO in the Army that when implementing orders that one is always fair, yet firm, and always consistent. Lastly, I have a strong desire to serve others. I truly didn’t release this until I was out of the Army. I enjoyed and prided myself on always trying to better myself and learn something every day to better myself. I believe my personality is stronger than some females I have encountered over the years and I feel I am able to assert myself more dominantly if ever needed in any given situation.…

Every day, we put the safety of the American people above our own, as we all walk through the doors, gates, grills and sally ports. We chose to jeopardize our lives and the lives of our families to complete the Bureau of Prisons mission, to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens. We knowingly put ourselves in harm’s way to protect and keep our communities more safe and secure.…

For this week’s article review, the class was asked to read an article written by Lambert and Paoline discussing the mentality of correctional staff while performing their job duties. The article was published in 2008.Understanding the critical role that staff play in any type of institution, but more so in a correctional setting, studies have concentrated on attitudes of their staff that focus on job stress, job satisfaction, and commitment.
