Even though our bill of rights extends our rights to fair trial, I do not feel that everyone is equal before the law without discrimination as Article 7 states (UDHR, n.d.). Not only the obvious current protests regarding racial profiling and police brutality, but the obvious acts showing a lack of innocence until proven guilty. Law enforcement in the US, has too much discretion in appointment of criminality. They do not conduct comprehensive investigations before they jump to conclusions. During my first year in Florida, I was pulled over, patted down and had my car searched. You might ask why; the answer is simply because I tried to hide the fact that my low beam head light was burnt out because I didn’t have the money to buy a new one or pay a ticket. That same year my husband was arrested for a capital felony that never transpired. Thus, Article 9 was violated (UDHR, n.d.). All I can say is thank God, we were not profiled against and I found a way to retain a good attorney that could keep the case from going to court, or life imprisonment would have been inevitable. Don’t tell me the innocent don’t go to prison, and that everyone is innocent until proven guilty as stated in Article 11, because that is not the reality with our current law enforcement and judicial system (UDHR, n.d.). Then there is Article 24 which instills the right to holidays with pay, I’m sure small businesses would not be too happy with this being the law for all employees (UDHR, n.d.). And lastly, we have Article 26, giving parents the right to choose the kind of education their children are given, this again would be a hot topic with all the controversy with common core and standardized testing (UDHR, n.d.). I do not feel the US should adopt and endorse this document as there are several articles in the declaration that our country would never be able to ensure, like Article 23 and Article 25 (UDHR, n.d.).
