Some of the most notable murders in recent memory includes the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The most controversial death was the one of Philando Castile’s, his death caused a full scale riot from the black community in Minnesota and all across the rest of the nation. The protesters called not only for Jeronimo Yanez, the officer who had shot Castile to be brought to justice but also for the people to stop automatically listing all police officers as the good guys. Police brutality on innocent blacks will continue to elevate in this country if we continue to ignore it or act as if it’s not a big deal. By continuing to ignore these kinds of issues we’ve let down civil rights activists such as Samuel Egerton. An African American man by the name Samuel Egerton carried a sign, to a march on Washington that took place over sixty years ago that read, “We Demand an End to Police Brutality Now!”. Ever since blacks became free in the United States they’ve obviously been mistreated by the police, but it’s the fact that they’ve been getting away with harming minorities that stings the most. Nearly 76 % of cops are acquitted of all charges after a murder on an African American since 2004. Two clear cut examples of this would be George Zimmerman and Jeronimo Yanez. Although one of them wasn’t a cop but rather a neighborhood watch, nonetheless they both got away with the murder of two innocent black men. I find it beyond difficult to fathom that both of these men actually went through a trial and received absolutely no punishment for murder. After he was acquitted for his crime, George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch, went on to bask in personal glory after he killed seventeen year old Trayvon Martin by selling the firearm he murdered him with for more than two fifty thousand dollars and Yanez is still a cop in St. Paul, Minnesota after shooting Philando Castile.
