Loving one self For centuries, people with different colors skins such as African American were dealt with persecutions, racism, and prejudices. Maya Angelou was a victim of these treatments. Due to the mistreatments from their oppressor, many are deficient in confidence and courage. Angelou initiated the idea of courage and confidence within her two poems “Still I rise” and “Phenomenal Women” by using variety of poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, and imagery. In “Still I rise” Angelou conveys her sense of confident, African American pride, feminism, beauty and independences. On the other hand “Phenomenal Woman”, develops the idea of, self-confidence, body language, and identity. Although these two poems are similar due to the connected theme of confident, they also accumulated an overall theme of empowerment. Empowering the readers, particularly women of color to over come the expectation of women right, power or beauty is identify.
In the poem “Still I rise” Angelou renders determination to rise above difficulties and discouragement for the audiences. At various points of the poem, she articulated the hatefulness and discouragements towards her “improper” behavior described by her oppressor. She quotes “You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise”.
