The PMHNP will hold two sessions a weeks with the adolescent and two sessions with the adolescent and the parent/ caregiver. The parent/ caregiver alliance is carried out in two to four sessions. The central goal of the phase is to reshape and rebuild how the parent/ caregiver interacts and communicate with their teen (Ewing et al., 2015). The PMHNP provides support, empathy, and increasing self-awareness of their parenting skills and strategies in trying to accomplish this goal. The PMHNP explores the parent’s own attachment in childhood and how those experiences connect to their parenting style. This phase can be emotional for the parent. During this time the PMHNP uses empathy and emotion focused therapeutic techniques to continue to assess their history. Patterson (2016) stated, “When parents experience empathy for their own attachment vulnerabilities and needs, they often gain insight and perspective on the emotional and psychological needs for their child” (p. 116).
