I believe this to be the main reason as while all men herein do not depart from the same doctrine or have had similar education, they all, in their own way, strive to philosophically argue the finer points of man’s plight and his place in this world. The one unifying element is that each has a passion for knowledge and within that passion lies their pursuit of knowledge. Socrates, as recounted within Plato’s The Apology, contemplated the idea of whether or not he was indeed truly wise because of his wisdom or that in spite of it, he was wise simply because he knew that he wasn’t and in fact did not know all. “I… asked myself whether I would be as I was – neither wise with their wisdom nor ignorant with their ignorance – or possess both qualities as they did.” (Plato, 46) He may not have so succinctly and unbeknownst to him summarily given the answer that all these men, himself included believed to be the primary reason for why they believed that thinking “philosophically” was important, but each man, in their own way believed in what they knew, the knowledge they possessed and spoke of that, philosophically and nothing more. They did not pretend to be anything else but well versed individuals that held a strong conviction in their principles and desired nothing more than to share them with their fellow man for the sake of enlightenment; a pursuit of the passion for knowledge. Philosophy, or “…philo-sophia (love of wisdom)”. (Stevenson, 1) This was the reason why doing philosophy was so important to them.
