The Physics of Cheerleading
The sport I chose to do my essay on was cheerleading, because of the physics shown all throughout the sport. There are stunts, tumbling, and jumps. Cheerleading is a sport that involves all these tasks and much more. Cheerleading consists of many concepts of physics, such as Gravity, Newton Laws of Motion, momentum, torque, potential and kinetic energy, velocity, force, gravitational acceleration, free fall. I will explain the definitions of each concept, so readers will be able to get the real meaning as to why these concepts consist of cheer leading.
Gravity is the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most purposes Newton 's laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications to take the general theory of relativity into account. Therefore, cheerleading involves the force of gravity, because of the stunts, the tumbling, and the jumps. Anything you drop accelerates at the same rate and anything you throw straight up, slows down at the same rate. In physics, gravitational acceleration is the acceleration of an object caused by force of gravitation. Consequently, a cheerleader must have enough force, power, and momentum to get off the ground with respect to gravity, but to also be able to perform a specific jump.
