Physical Characteristics Of 3D Printers

Improved Essays
This research’s problem statement investigates the ability to connect a 3D printed model to the 3D printer used for its production. The main objective focused on identification of physical characteristics of the 3D printed model that are caused by a specific 3D printer parameter. Two 3D printers were utilized in this research. The first is a Printrbot 3D printer (model 1404) running Marlin Firmware (version: 1.0.0 bedlevel metal- simple). The software used to communicate with the Printrbot 3D printer is Repetier-Host (version 0.56) running on a Macbook Pro. Figure 1. Printrbot Model 1404 The second 3D printer is the developer’s edition of the Voxel8 [29]. Voxel8 utilizes a proprietary cloud application for printer communication via WiFi or network connectivity. The design and development started with …show more content…
Both 3D printers follow the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. The Printrbot 1404 is capable of printing both Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polylactic Acid (PLA) plastics on a heated printed bed. The Printrbot extruder is able to move on the x, y, and z axis, while its print bed is limited to x axis movements. The Voxel8 is also capable of printing both ABS and PLA plastics with the addition of a conductive silver material. The Voxel8 also includes a heated print bed. The Voxel8 extruder is capable of movement on the x, y, z axis, while its printed bed is limited to movement along the z axis. The print bed for each 3D printer can also be covered by specific material to aid in print adhesion.
The investigation identified various parameters during the printing process that can have physical effects on the printed object. These parameters will be changed to analyze the different physical properties they incorporate into the model. The three parameters identified are the 3D printer, the slicer used to process the model file, and the print bed

Printmaking is an art form that largely began in the early 16th Century Renaissance Europe. The art form involved drawing or engraving directly in a metal plate, and the use of paint and oils in order to duplicate an image. This inexpensive process allowed for the infinite duplication of artwork, resulting in the large recognition of artists from across Europe and public knowledge of their works. This form of art was of great benefit to those of whom could not afford original works, allowing for the lower classes of Europe to afford and hence appreciate great works and artists. Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was born in Nuremberg, Germany during the European Reformation and the inauguration of the Northern European Renaissance (1430-1580).…
