a) Individuals with language weaknesses have difficulties with language comprehension and background knowledge. Their ability to use language receptively and expressively is impaired, and, as a result their ability to process language for use in reading and writing is often delayed. Frequently, those with language deficits can appear typical, although their use of language lacks depth and vocabulary that would be expected of a child that age.

As students with articulation errors improve their ability to speak through Speech-Language instruction and phonemic awareness activities, phonics and phonemic awareness tends to improve. Some students also have difficulties processing language and need direct instruction as described above.
