My Dyslexia And Learning

I had a very hard time learning when I was in school. I have dyslexia and learning has not been easy for me. I would study for hours only to learn that I hadn 't retained anything. I was tested and put into a special needs classroom. I have struggled with dyslexia all my life but over the years I have learned how to read and better comprehend information. I have done a lot of research of what dyslexia is. Here is some valuable information that I had found about dyslexia.
According to David Perstein, MD, MBA, FAAP , "Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically

The test tests the following; social (interpersonal), spatial, musical, self (intrapersonal), nature (naturalist), language (linguistic), body movement (kinestic) and logic/math to find out the type of intelligence is strongest in a person. According to the Literacynet.org website, it says "This form can help you determine which intelligences are strongest for you ." The test results show that I scored the highest on being social. The test results that showed that I have social intelligence said "You like to develop ideas and learn from other people. You have good social skill. Effective techniques for enhancing your learning social intelligence include taking part in group discussions or discussing a topic one-to-one with another person." I agree with this because I enjoy to spending time with people and learning how they see the world. I really like to know what people are thinking. Being social helps me to remember things because I am hearing people talk. Since I am an auditory learner this helps me a lot. I scored the second highest on spatial. The test said results for spatial said "You remember things visually, including exact sizes and shapes of objects. You like posters, charts, and graphics. You like any kind of visual clues. You enjoy drawing." I agree that I have spatial intelligence because I can remember things if I can see. Things that I can see I have a better understanding of the …show more content…
I am going to start recording all of my notes and listening to them in the car and when I am falling asleep at night. I am going to start recording when I am in class so hopefully, I will not forget anything that the instructor had given out that was important. I am going to spend more time reading and taking notes because when I see and write it, it will help me retain the information longer. Now that I have completed these assessments and learned the best ways for me to learn I know that dyslexia will not get me down any longer. It is all about getting the right tools and resources to help us so we can learn and go farther in life. I have suffered from depression because I have felt stupid at times in my life and I didn 't understand why I couldn 't learn or retain anything but now I know that I have the knowledge of knowing how I learn I can succeed in college. I wish when I was in school that the schools would have used these test. I could have had it easier in school if I only knew how I needed to study. Learning is a process and we all learn differently. We all are unique and special because God created each of us differently and with different learning styles.
The two assessment both showed me that I am a visual and an auditory learner. I was impressed that both of them gave the same results. The test was easy to take and understand. I highly recommend them to anyone that wants to know the

“Parents believe the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education should provide training for educators so teachers understand what dyslexia is” (Leicht). Children with dyslexia may experience difficulties at school because they feel like they do not fit in with the other children in their class. Teachers can break tasks down into small easily remembered pieces of information. “Parents of children with dyslexia often have to struggle to get their children the education they need to succeed” (Leicht). “Encouraging a daily routine to help develop the child's own self-reliance and responsibilities could help in the classroom environment” (Leicht).…

Unfortunately, I have been heavily diagnosed with the excruciating learning disability of dyslexia. All of these negative terms were how I used to interpret the meaning behind this so-called disability. From kindergarten through eighth grade, all of my teachers at the private school I attended, Oregon Episcopal School, were well aware of this quality that made me different than the majority of the students. Imagine falling in a ditch alone and unnoticed struggling to climb out, through many different approaches focussing on how to succeed, I was fortunate enough to have teachers who have helped me build a bridge to get over that ditch. The other side of the bridge seemed too far to see at one point but I was never alone.…

Dyslexia is an inherited condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language, despite having an at least average intelligence. Dyslexia is very common, but has only been talked about in recent years. It was 1878 when German neurologist, Adolph Kussmaul, first used the phrase “word blindness” describing what we know as dyslexia today. The word dyslexia was first used by Rudolf Berlin of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1887 to describe the inability to read. In 1905 W.E. Burner published the first report of childhood reading difficulties in the U.S..…

Therefore, they may need support for the first time or may need to continue with the kind of support they had while in school, which is why it is all the more imperative for colleges and university to be completely on board. Dyslexia is not a new disorder but one that we are now commencing to know more about with the latest studies continually being conducted in the field. Dyslexia does not have to be, what many might consider, nothing more than a lifelong struggle and being frequently misunderstood, because it is not. Dyslexia can be a turning point in a student’s life - a force that helps build, empower, and train those who besiege us in a way that others who do not have the disorder might take for granted. Dyslexia can - and should - be viewed not as a disability, but as an ability; one that serves to motivate and empowers those who once thought the impossible was just that - impossible - when in fact, the impossible is very much possible and real.…

Like I said earlier, it can be hereditary and more than one family member can have it at one time. Reading, writing and spelling are all essential subjects and is vital that dyslexia is identified as early as possible, because the younger you are when identified, the likelihood of overcoming this condition increases. With alternative learning methods, people who have this learning disorder will succeed at reading, writing and spelling as any other person. Combining visual, auditory and tactile instruction appears to enhance both learning and the mastery of a task (SLD Companion Manual, 1998). There are 3 different types of Dyslexia: Trauma, Primary and Secondary/Developmental.…
