Personal Narrative: The City Of Downtown Toronto

Improved Essays
Toronto’s downtown core is an exciting and vibrant city. It is the most populated city in Canada and truly is an amazing place to live, work and study. Toronto is filled with great economic opportunities, multicultural diversity, and endless exhilarating things to do. It’s strong “sense of place” (Relph, 1997), is the reason I decided to study at Ryerson University.
However, due to the rapidly increasing population and lack of affordable rental and housing in the downtown Toronto area. I find myself in a situation where I am unable to live there, and I don’t have many other options to get to class. Taking an Uber or taxi is far too expensive and driving to school is too much of a hassle because of traffic, limited parking space, and high-priced

One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

Invisible City is a documentary filmed by Hubert Davis. Following the lives of Mikey and Kendell, two youths currently situated in Regent Park’s community housing during the beginning of Toronto’s ‘Revitalization’ plan for the area in 2005. During this development of the city, Davis explores the issues that affect these adolescent boys and their mothers. My initial interpretation of the film is how well the documentary addresses the concerns around public housing. The policy in the film such as Pathways to Education is relevant to Social Welfare.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

During the course of my journey from city #1 to city #2, I noticed an increase in shops and advertisements which feature non-English languages. This gives evidence for a higher incidence of immigrant communities in city #2 and city #3, which may exacerbate the polarization issue already existing in these parts of Toronto. As Hulchanski mentions in page three of the text, Toronto’s diversity is likely a contributor to the continued growth of the divide between the rich and the poor in Toronto. Particularly around York Mills Road and northward, I noticed a large decrease in the quality of housing available and a suspicious correlating increase in non- English signage, as well as shops and restaurants offering ethnic foods. As migrants come to Toronto and other large Canadian cities, they tend to settle in city #3 because of its affordability and are unable to access employment and education opportunities, as well as transportation to public services which would allow them to more easily integrate into Canadian life and move into city #1 or #2.…

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

It is the country where a lot of Americans want to settle down. Here I am in Toronto and it does not take me long to say that this Maple Leaf nation can be as warming to the visitors as it is to its residents. Toronto has a great weather and compared to the scorching New Delhi heat, the summer here is pleasant and gives you the feel of an Indian November. Toronto is full of visitors almost throughout the year, attracting millions from far and wide. This city is a warehouse of extremely satisfying as well as mind-boggling aspects.…

Being in New York City itself was all too surreal, like a dream come true. Buildings raced each other in a quest to touch the soft blue sky and people littered the streets and sidewalks. Crossing the sidewalk into the large park was like crossing the border into another world.…
