I can vividly recall instances where my parents had to pull the ropes that held our shelter together to ensure that it was not blown away by the strong winds that often blew during the rainy nights. However, on a certain night, the winds were too strong and managed to blow off the tarpaulin roofs that covered our temporary house. Unfortunately, the roof that had been blown off hit a ten-year-old girl who was a close friend to me. Due to the substantial hit, the young girl succumbed to the injuries caused by the tarpaulin roof. I stood in the middle of our house dazed in shock and fear over what I had just witnessed. I could not fathom what had happened. All I remember is my father carrying me out of our house in search of a safer place for us to spend the night. It has been eight years since that incident happened, but I still recall the horrific sight of losing a close friend. Such thoughts inspire me to think of a world without refugees. Sometimes I wish there was a hospital in the neighboring village of Pathri in Nepal for people such as my injured friend to receive medical attention. In this way, may be her life could have been saved. In spite of these severe conditions, I remained optimistic that things would get better with time. My family had been selected for resettlement in the United States as part of the solution to the Bhutanese refugee problem. My family settled in Fort Worth, Texas and I cannot express how glad I was to have finally moved to a country renowned for having numerous opportunities for all. However, the first few months were challenging since the culture, the language, and the people were different. However, I remembered the dire situation I had lived in and decided to cope with any challenge that came my way and be successful. Due to the various facilities and support services available in the US compared to my upbringing, I felt like I had been afforded a second chance in
