Personal statement
The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement. Knowing that this wasn’t a place to raise children my parents moved to malwia before they had their first child. With very little resources, my parents managed to strive towards moving the entire family forward. Living as nomadic people was the

Being under similar circumstances, we have formed a tight bond and help each other out when needed. As unorthodox as my community is, we make the best of the resources we have and strive for opportunities for everyone.

It was a place where what I believed was neither a problem nor a threat. It was a place where I found peace without judgment, and friendship without deception or lies. My friends, teachers, peers, coaches, and family gave me the confidence to pursue a higher education and push me to excel and succeed in whatever I aspire to become.

A community environment serves an important function in shaping our personal development and belief system. The community an individual grows up in says a lot about that individual as a person. With strengths, comes weaknesses and every community differs in many ways. The community I grew up in may differ from the community others lived in, and that’s what makes us all unique and different from one another. No matter if you live on Grand View Drive or you live on the south side of Chicago each community has its different problems, and just because someone may live in a different neighborhood than you doesn’t mean you are complete polar opposites it just means you experience obstacles differently in your daily routine and that is completely…

Many if not all of the political leaders of the U.S are in some way or another involved in religion, whether that was in their childhood or they still practice their religion as adults. The idea is that religion in some way tied to politics, and this goes back some 386 years ago when it John Winthrop time. The concept of a “City upon a Hill” has been used to bring a nation more united, and has been widely used in political speeches. The concept was first mentioned in the Bible, by Jesus himself when he addressed the people, and then by John Winthrop who used it in his famous sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” to the puritans aboard the Arbella on the way to America. At the start of the journey, I had no premonition this trip could have changed my life. My parents look back on the pilgrimage as what strengthened their faith, on the contrary, I remember it as what destroyed mine. To others in my caravan it was the holy grail.…

Additionally, my duties as a health care provider involve several counseling services including building adult relationships, pediatric counseling considerations, mental health considerations, and multicultural considerations. As I walked down the hall, I could not stop smiling as I waited to go in the classroom and meet my new teacher. With my head hanging, I started hearing a group of my classmates laugh and when I looked up I realized I was the joke. Tears began to flow down my cheek and run off my face, one of my classmates asked, “what's wrong?”, and as I began to think about it I cried even more. “I hate being here, I feel so out of place, I don’t understand why everyone hates me!” , the little voices in my head said as I started to get bullied in sixth grade.…

The suburbs are envisioned to be spacious, uniform, and clean— epitomes of the American dream— while cities are often deemed crowded and dirty concrete jungles. However, the sight of busy streets filled with honking and yelling, a Walmart or McDonalds on every corner, and people rushing from home to work and work to home provides a sense of calmness that cannot be found in the suburbs. The city signifies people toiling to build and advance their careers, while the suburbs signify well-established affluent families. My understanding of the suburbs may be completely wrong for I have lived in a city all my life, and that is all that I have known. Therefore, the little understanding I do have has been developed solely from secondary experience such as movies as stories.…

All of us have faced challenges within our years of adulthood and childhood that we struggled with. These struggles change who we are or how we later approached the rest of our lives. I believe that challenges are good because they allow us to learn from our mistakes, become comfortable with change, and grow into well-rounded individuals. Personally, I value honesty on the emotional level, such as the tendency to build strong relationships with others close to me. Throughout many years of my life, I believed those values, but never was able to follow those beliefs.…
