Connections have always mattered, whether it’d be through social media or through other forms of media. “Connecting enhances life on so many levels, it’s common sense to conclude that one should be as connected as possible all the times. Digital maximalism is clearly a superior way of living” (Powers 36). Powers then continued to state in the next sentence “Except when it isn’t.” Many people can agree with Powers on his argument. He has so much reason. We as humans have this desire to connect, to mix and mingle, and we do it through our “screens?” As Powers has stated before, “digital busyness is the enemy of depth” (Powers 17). Constantly being distracted by our daily lives, on our phones, on our laptops, on our kindles, on our tablets. Never being able to take in the complete moment. There was something clogging my mind, Netflix playing in the deep background, my large phone occupying my left hand. My focus was somewhere else. This essay required that I looked into the deep parts of my memory. I picked a point in time that mattered to me most. When I was completely aware of my surroundings, yet, sitting there my mind could not recall the moment. My electronics were overtaking.
In a program called Younglife, there are camps around the nation. However, if Younglife paid all of their workers, they would not be able to manage that financial responsibility. This is the reason why they reach out to high schoolers that have already gone to one of their camps. The most difficult challenge I had ever faced was overcoming my suicidal thoughts and attempts before it was too late. During my Junior year at Magnolia Highschool, I struggled keeping my sanity in control. Fighting against the conflicting natures of my Samoan cultural traditions, family expectations, religious beliefs, and school standards, causing me to lower my self-esteem and motivation. Currently during this time I was helping support my parents who were living homeless outside on the streets while dealing with the possiblity that I would never seeing my older brother again except behind a glass window. As a child, I grew up in the rough neighborhoods of Panama City FL, walking home from school you could hear the gun shots, see the weed being distributed from one hand to the other, and grown men walking around with their pants below their waste along with a gun on the side. Being from the south, such things became normal to see on a day to day basis. However, I told myself that if I wanted to be successful I would never give into a lifestyle of that sort. I knew that I had to be better than what I saw on the streets, and eventually an opportunity came for me to do just that. It was an opportunity for me to get away from the violence, the gangs that surround my neighborhood, and the overall hostile environment.…

I was near the breaking point. I was using every ounce of energy from within my body to keep everything together, to keep all of my emotions and tears locked up from the rest of the world in fear of exposing my true weakness. It was quite possibly the only (currently) living thing that was capable of shattering my entire life. Even when I felt like I was on top of the world and my entire life was bursting with excitement and enthusiasm, words would always result in my downfall. I never fully understood why such a small, insignificant thing was capable of shutting my entire body down.…

Somewhat related to cognition and morality, is a child’s social and emotional development. For example, following social cognitive theory, I started to regulate my own behaviors more frequently in middle childhood, instead of relying on outside punishments and rewards to shape my behavior (Rathus, 2011, p. 220). Nonetheless, my social development was quite poor. The first reason I lagged in social development is that my ADHD caused me to lack social awareness and thus get rejected by my peers, preventing me from learning through socialization. My weight also hindered me, particularly when combined with my social “awkwardness”, which together led to me having very few friends throughout middle childhood.…

Throughout the course of my life, I have had multiple “ups and downs”, like a roller coaster, which steadily defined who I am today. As a young child, I was shielded from most of the public world because my parents enrolled me into a private school. My continuous naivety throughout my elementary years led me to a rude awakening when I was first introduced into middle school. Although this defined me as a maturing person, like a roller coaster car moving upwards at a snail’s pace, what truly changed my ambitions and perspective on school, and brought me to my highest point, was when my father came into my life again.…
