Throughout the course of my life, I have had multiple “ups and downs”, like a roller coaster, which steadily defined who I am today. As a young child, I was shielded from most of the public world because my parents enrolled me into a private school. My continuous naivety throughout my elementary years led me to a rude awakening when I was first introduced into middle school. Although this defined me as a maturing person, like a roller coaster car moving upwards at a snail’s pace, what truly changed my ambitions and perspective on school, and brought me to my highest point, was when my father came into my life again. Halfway through my freshman year in high school, I received a birthday letter, written in a form of cursive that was barely

At first, I thought that my life was just simply a “repetition” on a daily basis, but as I reflect on special moments in my life, I see that there is a journey written among the lines of my life. My life’s journey as a student is much like Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey because I met my teachers who would soon become my mentors, had to deal with many conflicts in school, and in the end I earned special rewards that would make me see life in a different perspective. Starting middle school wasn’t easy. It was like traveling to a foreign place and not knowing how to communicate with…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Beginning junior year, I occupied myself with the most constructive investment in my life. My daily routine was bland, but oddly hailed as the ultimate path to victory. I was learning in school, but the learning lacked meaning. Plot lines and mathematical formulas were unavailing ideas, which I tepidly regurgitated. I concluded that a life permeated with monotonous toil was not worth celebrating on my day of judgment.…

Life started getting rough for me around the time that my dad was terminated (11/10/2016). Everything seems to be coming at me all at once. Asides from studying for finals, I was also focused on working two jobs because everything in the house became my responsibility. Mortgage became my responsibility, bills became mine, car loans became mine, expenses in the house became mine as well. I became the support system for my family, both emotionally and financially.…

To Buy or Not To Buy A Kia Like me, many of us do not have the tech skills to really evaluate a car on more than just looks, gas mileage, and price; this is why when searching for a new car doing your research and reading expert and customer reviews can make all the difference. When I was looking for a new car when my lease was up, I did a lot of research online and read many customer reviews in order to find a car that would fit me for the next few years. When it was all said and done, I ended up with the 2015 Kia Optima EX, which seemed to have the perfect balance of style and performance for me. In my readings, I came along many articles and learned a lot about different cars that were all comparable to the Optima; like the Honda Civic, Honda Accord, and Mazda 3. Compared with other mid-size sedan in its class the new 2015 Kia Optima EX over all excels in its close attention to its technology, performance, and affordability making the Kia motor group worthy of another look.…

I am not talking about driving projects, I am literally talking about driving automobiles. This article is a precursor to what I would soon be writing about in my next article. Until recently, I had been an aggressive driver. Not always, but most of the times. It would keep my family and friends on the edges of their seats.…

I reminisce when I was just beginning my adolescent years. I was a bystander to what my parents had to struggle with, and they’ve told me about their journey. Five years, they knew nothing, absolutely anything about speaking English. When they would go out somewhere their only way of communication was using their hands. One thing I remember my father would tell me, “I didn’t take this journey for myself… I did it for you so you would have a greater opportunity than me.”…

Many people go through life thinking that intelligence is static. Many think that people are simply born with certain skills; they either have them, or they don’t. After all, the only way to be smart, is to be born with it, right? Or is there more to it than that? It only makes sense that the brain, being like any muscle in the human body, would work identically to say, a bicep; the more you condition it, the more it will thrive, and the more it will expand.…

In elementary school, one of my teachers was especially infamous for humiliating students. I remember him loudly shaming one of my classmates, scoffing at the work turned in. Another moment that stuck with me was when I had stayed in during tutorial for help with math concepts, and he became increasingly angry when I made a mistake on the problems. I ended up developing a deep-seated fear of rejection. I generally avoided talking to my teachers for help from then on, hoping that the lack of interaction meant they would not give me grief over the mistakes I would make.…

In my childhood, I went to Nerd Camp at Northwestern during the summer. While I was there, I fell in love with Northwestern’s environment, especially the city of Evanston. I knew that I wanted to apply there in the future. Of course, a few three-week long stays at Northwestern wasn’t enough for me to learn what being an undergraduate student there is like, but during my transition from Nerd Camp Student to High School Student, and now to College Student, I’ve also realized the academic benefits Northwestern offers.…

“Spaghetti and hydrogen, what do they have in common?” I always remembered the question my physics teacher raised in first physics class in eighth grade. “From the leaves on the trees to the school bus that drives you here”, he continued, “for every matter in the world, there exist certain underlying rules that shape it into what it is, determine how it functions, and thus make it predictable and understandable.” Identifying his conclusion shapes me into a discerning observer. Ever since, I was spurred by an irresistible desire to find out the “underlying rules” that dominate the kaleidoscopic world.…

Life can be: harsh, cruel, unforgiving, troublesome; you could change that one word to any other adjective and deep down you could still feel that everything is unfair. To some that feeling is a weight that can drag you down and drown you from the inside out. Life isn't good to everyone and it's certainly not going to be fair all the time, it's an unknown concept. Some people think that when life drags them down, and they suffer with their emotions and their thoughts and their hearts at night that they're weak, because they can't survive. But no armor came out of a battle unscathed, because scratches, dents, and deformations showed strength in time.…

I have had numerous angry spouts with my mother, over countless years. It has gotten to the point that it no longer feels like she’s close to me. Since I do care about my mom I decided to do my paper on her. Since my mom has a short temper it was rather difficult to prepare my approach because if I fail it will be a multi hour argument that accomplishes nothing but makes both parties very angry at each other. After many fails and many arguments, I found that it went well all the way up to when I get to the part where I make a request or requests.…

We were driving to New York and Rhode Island over the summer; me, my sister, our cousins, and grandparents. It was a very lengthy drive, supposed to talk only 9-10 hours, but for us it took 13. There were many factors for why this trip took longer than expected. About halfway through driving, there was a huge storm that hit us right about when we were located in Pennsylvania. This storm was huge, and there was so much rain it was hard to see in order to keep driving.…

We were having dinner and I was sitting on the couch with my sister right next to me, and then my parents started acting weird and I was very confused. Then my dad asked me if I wanted to go next year to the United States. I immediately was unsure because I had never been very far from my house or from Spain, I was only 16 years old. The only good thing that I heard about it was that my sister went a few years ago, she made a lot of very good friends and learned English and had a lot fun.…
