Personal Narrative: A Career As A Minority Attorney

Improved Essays
The most enriching moments of my career have been the instances where I have received practical advice and inspiration from fellow minority attorneys. For example, last year I participated in a “My Brother’s Keeper” event, which brought together several prominent black male attorneys from various firms and industries to openly discuss our shared experience as attorneys of color. This event challenged me to further develop my network, hone my practice, and prepare for the next opportunity. Ever since, I have become motivated to identify a similar event or experience focused largely on my practice in employment law. I believe that the National Employment Law Council’s (“NELC”) 2017 Academy is an ideal opportunity that will provide invaluable benefits to my career as an employment law litigator.
Unfortunately, minority attorneys often feel as though they exist within a bubble and miss chances to create meaningful, career-building relationships. At times, I have struggled with this in my own practice. Nevertheless, so many minority attorneys have overcome tremendous obstacles and attained hard-fought success in the legal profession, especially

While there are many elements to a successful mentor relationship, three qualities are particularly important to me. First, I would like to learn from a mentor with significant employment law and civil rights trial experience. I intend to develop a dynamic trial practice, thus the insights from an established trial litigator would be incredibly valuable. Second, I would benefit from an effective sounding board: a mentor that is both supportive and skeptical of my ideas to ensure that I am carefully considering my professional and personal growth. Third, a mentor that is willing to open his or her network and thoughtfully facilitate connections with helpful individuals or organizations would significantly further my career

Under the Influence: Discrimination Since the start of the 21st century, racial diversity has increased and the nation’s minority population has grown substantially. Minorities today are the majority in many parts of the country. Studies predict that if current rates of the national population continue to trend the way it has for the past 20 year, then by 2035, minorities will outnumber non-Hispanic caucasians. There are many benefits and advantages of diversity, however, there are also challenges and barriers. My two most substantial accomplishments are becoming the President of the St. John’s University NAACP and interning for the House of Representatives this past summer. I view these two accomplishment as substantial because I believe I defied the odds to achieve them. When I became an executive board member of the St. John’s University NAACP, serving as the chapter’s first Membership Chair, I told myself that I never wanted to serve as President. I felt as if I wouldn’t be capable to handle all the worries and stress that went along with holding such a high position. Unbeknownst to me, the next academic year, I would be serving as President of the St. John’s University NAACP.…

Minority executives have most of Americans thinking that minorities no longer face discrimination in the workplace. The reality is that these success stories are the exception and not the rule. They are more a result of the perseverance, talent, ambition, and determination of these executives than anything else. Many minorities have been able to gain entrance into the workplace, and often climb into lower and middle-level management positions. However, in many cases, the path to success dead-ends.…

The historical efforts of the mandates in Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Affirmative Action (AA) have made great strides. Their efforts have changed the manner in which many organizations recruit and promote. Moreover, the EEO and AA are the tools used in many organizations that increase opportunities for both females and minorities in their employee pool (Leonard, 1983). However, there may be instances where the programs used to promote equal treatment within the populace discriminates by its use.…

Norman Davis’ book , the Black Quarterback Syndrome class presentation heighten some awareness in the way organizations conducted their business in a different era. Today, some pioneers tend to experience similar behavior. In the interest of preventing Davis’ (2010) definition of the black quarterback syndrome for pioneers, organizations need to promote diversity. For the purpose to include many people who are different from one another, without taking into account the multitude of problems that diversity brings (Thatcher, Jehn & Zanutto, 2003). Having personally experience some BQS, with evidence from my former supervisor along with some internal feelings, I come to believe that today there are many improvements in the workforce.…

Mentorship plays such an important role in all of our lives regardless of vocation and interests. Delving into history we see how many of the renowned innovators, actors, politicians, and business leaders were mentored during some stage of their lives. I can recall the names of a few mentor-mentee relationships I became aware of over time - Plato mentored by Socrates - David Letterman mentored by Peter Lassally - Warren Buffet mentored by Benjamin Graham – Steve Jobs mentored by Robert Friedland - Russell Crowe mentored by Tom Sharpin and Bill Gates mentored by Dr. Ed Roberts. Having participated in mentorship at both ends of the spectrum, I know firsthand about its benefits, which include maturity, focus, diligence, accountability and sustained…

In the spring semester of 2015, I started a paid internship at Woner, Glenn, Reeder, and Girard, P.A. During this time I have gained experience in legal research and language by helping prepare documents and observing proceedings. In addition, I have been able to work side by side with two female attorneys. Even in a small firm, they are the minority, which coincides to the other areas of the justice system. I think it is important that women enter into this profession and add the diversity that is deeply needed; I believe I am a good candidate to contribute to this…

I interviewed an African American coworker, or as it happened, was more a discussion about the current state of the inclusion of minorities in America and more specifically the inclusion of African Americans in the workforce. The coworker I interviewed is in his early 30s, an 11 year military veteran, and is currently working on his second masters, which is an MBA. As mentioned previously, he is of African American decent and the only minority working in our office, which is made up of twenty two white males. He was raised by his grandmother from a young age after his father left him and his mother was unable to care for him. During his childhood, he lived in a predominately black neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh.…

In order to examine diversity in today’s workplace, we must first look at the history of diversity and its place within the workplace. Over the past couple of decades, diversity in the workplace has been an increasing norm, which is visible in many companies. However, today’s definition of diversity has a completely different meaning than what diversity might have meant twenty or so years ago. Throughout the early days of business, when companies began creating initiatives for diversity, the focus was on African Americans and other minorities.…

Since the moment I decided to pursue becoming an advocate attorney I knew that I needed to attend a top-notch law school. If other people’s well-beings and futures were going to be in my hands then I needed to receive the best legal education I could. I visited South Texas College of Law in July of 2015 at an open house that made me realize that this was the school I had been looking for. The students who spoke on the panel and gave tours demonstrated the camaraderie between the students at the school. The student who led my tour told me that her experience at South Texas College of Law was much better than her previous law school because students here lift each other up rather than tear each other down.…
