The Tiradores Battalion got to the Panamanian city of Colón the day of November 3 1903. There was some delays on the way to Panama City caused by the Panama Railway authorities who were against the separatist movement.

A naval squadron in the Bay of Panama was captured without resistance. One of the greatest challenges the builders faced of the Panama Canal was the tropical diseases. The health precautions taken during the construction helped greatly to the success of the canal's construction. The Canal Commission hired Colonel William Crawford Gorgas as head of hospitals and sanitation. Under his leadership, many new departments of sanitation were made to cover different problems with sanitation problem.
The sanitation work included clearing land and making quarantine facilities. The hardest part of the sanitation program, though, was undoubtedly the effort to eradicate the mosquitoes that carirre yellow fever and malaria.
